Underpinning Foundation: Strengthening Your Homeâs Stability with Foundation Solutions
Underpinning is a critical process for reinforcing and stabilizing foundations that have become compromised. Whether due to soil movement, water damage, or construction defects, a weakened foundation can jeopardize the safety and longevity of a structure. At Foundation Solutions, we specialize in underpinning foundation services, offering tailored solutions to strengthen and secure your property. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of underpinning, the signs that indicate a need for it, and why Foundation Solutions is your top choice for foundation repair and stabilization.
What is Underpinning?
Underpinning is a construction technique used to strengthen the foundation of an existing building. It involves extending the foundationâs depth or breadth so that it rests on a more stable soil layer. This process is essential for addressing various foundation issues, ensuring that the building can support its intended loads without shifting or settling.
When is Underpinning Necessary?
Several scenarios may necessitate underpinning, including:
Foundation Settlement: When a foundation sinks or shifts due to soil compaction or erosion, underpinning can restore stability.
Increased Load Requirements: If youâre adding additional floors or heavy equipment to a building, underpinning may be needed to support the increased load.
Soil Changes: Variations in soil moisture content or the presence of expansive clay can cause foundations to move.
Construction Defects: Poor construction practices, such as inadequate soil compaction or insufficient foundation depth, may require corrective underpinning.
Natural Disasters: Events like earthquakes, floods, or landslides can weaken foundations, making underpinning necessary.
Signs Your Foundation Needs Underpinning
Identifying the signs of foundation problems early can help you avoid more severe issues and costly repairs. Look for the following indicators that underpinning may be needed:
Visible Cracks: Large or expanding cracks in walls, floors, or the foundation itself can signal foundation movement.
Uneven Floors: Floors that slope or feel uneven may indicate that the foundation is settling unevenly.
Sticking Doors and Windows: Difficulty opening or closing doors and windows can be a sign of a shifting foundation.
Gaps Around Windows and Doors: Gaps appearing around window and door frames are a common sign of foundation movement.
Separation of Walls: Walls pulling away from the house or each other can indicate serious foundation issues.
The Underpinning Process
At Foundation Solutions, we follow a meticulous and comprehensive underpinning process to ensure the highest quality results. Hereâs a step-by-step overview of our approach:
Initial Inspection and Assessment: Our team of experts conducts a thorough inspection to diagnose the root cause and extent of the foundation problems.
Custom Underpinning Plan: Based on the assessment, we design a customized underpinning plan tailored to your specific needs and building conditions.
Excavation: We carefully excavate around the foundation to prepare for the underpinning process.
Foundation Extension: We extend the foundationâs depth or breadth by adding new support elements, such as piers, piles, or concrete footings.
Stabilization and Reinforcement: We stabilize the newly installed supports and reinforce the foundation to ensure long-term stability.
Backfilling and Restoration: Once the underpinning is complete, we backfill the excavated areas and restore the landscaping, ensuring a clean finish.
Final Inspection and Quality Assurance: We conduct a final inspection to confirm that the underpinning work meets our rigorous quality standards.
Why Choose Foundation Solutions?
Selecting the right company for your underpinning needs is crucial. Hereâs why Foundation Solutions is the best choice:

into you â l.at
lee anton x fem reader
your mom and her best friend set you up with your old friend from childhood, and you two pretend to date in order to keep them happy. but what happens when feelings start to brew, and the past gets revealed?
college!au, fake dating, ex friends to semi friends to lovers, slowburn, mutual pining, fluff, a bit of angst, smut 18+ MDNI, anton is a self sabotaging idiot.
đ cw. smut (ofc), dom!anton, fingering, not really a size kink but anton's size is mentioned a few times, overstimulation, unprotected sex (pls wrap it up,,) creampie, little bit of dry humping, cum eating

đ§ into you . tamia ⢠sycamore girl . rex orange county
"i feel like it's so humiliating having my mom set me up on a date." you hold the phone in between your cheek and your shoulder, trying your best to find a good enough outfit.
your best friend, sky, was your emotional support through this whole situation. "it's kind of cute though, like she's looking out for you in a way" she says over the speaker, and you roll your eyes at her comment.
"right, because nothing is cuter than your mom saying 'you're so lonely i'm going to take matters into my own hands'," a hard sigh leaves your lips.
"well when you put it that way, i guess you're right. but this could be nice! what if he's nice, what if he's hot-"
"please, i don't really have a lot of hope in whatever nice guy has picked out"
speaking of the nice guy, you heard the doorbell ring and you sigh again knowing that the next few hours you could be spending rotting in bed, you will now be spending with a mystery man who's probably some secret asshole that's masked as an angel by your mother.
you get off the phone with sky and make your way downstairs towards the door, slipping your shoes and sweater on. you look to your side and see your mom walking down the hall with a bright smile on her face. as you open the door, you see someone you never expected to see.
lee anton.
he has this near fake smile on his face when the door opens, making eye contact with you and then smiling at your mom who was behind you.
"hi y/n, hi mrs.l/n" he starts and you have to fight your eyes from rolling so hard. why was he here? surely he wasnât⌠no. no way
"hello anton, you look so handsome, come in, come in!" your mom now is pushing you to the side to drag the boy into the house.
"now y/n, i didn't tell you before because i wanted to make sure you wouldn't freak out, but anton here is your date!"
and that's when a piece of your soul died.
"excuse me?" you try your absolute hardest to not yell, but the confusion and slight anger is building up.
ever since you were little, your mom and antons mom always wished that you two would end up together. you two were friends up until high school, but with new friend groups and new interests the two of you went down different paths. it happens and there weren't really any hard feelings, at least until he started completely ignoring your existence. you didn't hate him, but you were not pleased with his past behavior. and you definitely were not pleased right now.
"don't be rude y/n, this is a great thing! you're a beautiful girl, and anton is a handsome boy. you two have known each other since you were kids and you both go to the same university! it's a perfect match. now you two hurry up and go so you don't miss the reservation i made. have fun" she shoves you two out of the door before you could protest any further and anton is saying goodbye to your mom in his fake sweet voice he's always used with her.
if only she knew that you two haven't spoken since junior year of high school.
you fold your arms across your chest while you walk towards antons car, him rushing to catch up to you so he could open the door.Â
"how nice of you" you taunted, giving him a fake smile before stepping into the passenger's seat of his car. he gives you that same fake smile before closing the door, not saying a word to you. he walks around the car and gets in, putting on his seatbelt and starting the car.
"you want aux?" he finally speaks, pressing the bluetooth options on his car to connect your phone if you'd like. you happily oblige, not wanting to listen to whatever he wants to put on. even if you two had very similar taste in music, you would always argue that your taste is better. once you press shuffle on your main playlist, he pulls his car out of your driveway and starts the drive to the restaurant your mother picked out for you.
you shift in the seat so you're leaning towards the window, and you open your messages to text your friend sky about the insane situation you were in,
you: oh my fucking god you: its anton you: lee fucking anton!! my mom is sick sky: omg you two haven't talked since highschool! sky: please don't kill him you: no promises sky: maybe you two will fall in love now you: over my dead body sky: if you are gonna be in the same space as him for the next few hours, maybe ask him to put me on with wonbin you: do not use my pain and suffering as a way to get dick sky: i'm trying to find ways for us both to benefit from this! sky: i shouldn't have to suffer because you don't want to talk to anton sky: plus anton is hot! as fuck! i say give it a shot, and if it works out then i can have a shot at his sexy friend you: you are evil sky: update me later babesÂ
aside from the music playing in the car, the ride to the restaurant was silent. anton wanted to talk, but he just couldn't find the right words to say. not like you would want to listen to anything he'd say anyways. but it was just for the car ride, he told himself he'd talk once you two were seated.
pulling into the parking lot, anton parks the car and turns off the ignition. he got out of the car and did a slight speed walk so he could open your door to let you out, and this time the smile was genuine as you got out of the car.
he's not an asshole, you think. i guess i could try and make the most of this date.
he was never an asshole to you, even throughout the years you haven't spoken. of course, avoiding you and acting like you don't exist at events could be taken as being an asshole, but it's not bad compared to the way you've been treated by other men. he's always been a sweet, well-mannered, soft spoken boy.
you two weren't best friends back then, but it still hurt when the two of you drifted apart.
as you two walk into the restaurant, anton talks to the host about the reservation your mother made and you two get seated at a nice booth near the back.
"so, did you know about this? like, did you know that i was the person you were getting set up with?" you start, not looking at him but looking at the menu to get a feel of what you'd want once the waiter comes around to ask for drinks.
"well not at first, but my mom kept hinting at things that traced back to you. wasn't surprised though, they've been trying to set us up since we were in elementary school." he says it almost with no emotion, and you react with a small laugh that makes him smile.
"what kinds of things did she say?" you're intrigued once you really process what he said.
"well" he starts, and you lean into the table with interest. "it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. she was just like 'you should come to visit this weekend, there's a girl i think you would really hit it off with. you actually know her and you two would make a great couple blah blah blah.' things she's already said to me before trying to set me and you up. your mom really didn't give you any hints about today?" it was his turn now to be intrigued, remembering how shocked you were to see him at the door earlier.
"i had no idea. i was scared she was setting me up with some ugly asshole that she would think i would like, when she really has no idea what my type is. she just told me to come for the weekend and was like 'oh he's a sweetheart you're going to love him!' and that was that." you mock your moms swooning voice and anton laughs.Â
the next hour and a half at the restaurant went well, you two were able to break the awkwardness and catch up from the past years. it felt good honestly. the relief of getting a friend back was always the best feeling.
once you two finished eating, the waiter came around to hand you guys the bill. you figured you two would just split it, this was technically a date but you didn't really think of it that way. and you didn't want anton spending his money on you, you both were forced on this 'date' and it wouldn't be fair in your eyes for him to pay for you. you quickly turn to grab your wallet out of your purse, but once you get your card out the waiter is already walking away with antons card.
"dude, you didn't have to do that!" you whisper yell at him, and he just chuckles.
"don't worry about it. date or not, if you pulled your card out it would look like i was some broke asshole trying to split the bill" he says in his soft voice and you nod, understanding where he was coming from.
the waiter comes back around with antons card, and you guys make your way out of the restaurant and back to his car. he opens the door for you again, you step in and make yourself comfortable this time, adjusting the seat to your liking.
the ride to your house was silent, but it was a comfortable silence. you didn't really know what this meant for the two of you. were you guys friends again? was this really a date and there were more in the foreseeable future? was this just a one time thing?
to be completely honest you didn't want to date anton. not that he wasn't attractive, you would be living a lie if you said he wasn't. he was definitely one of the most attractive guys you've ever seen, but it would just be weird to date him. you guys were friends and it was still a semi-mystery on where you two stand in terms of friendship. and did you really want to date someone your mom set you up with? you're still in college and honestly you don't know what exactly you want yet.
"so um, i'll walk you to the door" suddenly the quiet was awkward again as he got out of the car to let you out and walk you to the front door. and now here you two were, standing awkwardly in front of the door both trying to think of something to say.
why was it so weird now? you were both fine holding a conversation not even an hour ago.
"sorry that our moms pushed us into doing this, but it was nice to uh- it was nice to talk to you again" anton puts his hands in his jean pockets and looks down at you with a sheepish smile, and you look up at him and smile back.
"yeah, it was nice seeing you. you're not gonna go ghost on me again after this are you? cus i know where you live, and i'll tell your mom" you threaten him, and he puts his hands up in defense. if there's one thing you remember about your friendship with anton, it was that his mom did not play about you. if even a scratch got on you when you and anton were together, he would get an earful about being too reckless. even if you were the reckless one
"there's no need for all of that! i won't go ghost on you, it's nice to get a friend back"
"well then, i'll see you on campus?" you look up at him, and he nods.
"see you on campus"
and with that, you put your keys into the door and make your way into the house, giving anton a small wave goodbye before closing the door and taking off your shoes. as you make your way through the house and pass the living room, you see your mother sitting on the couch with a smile so wide her face probably hurts.
"next time you ask me to come home for the weekend to go on a date, i'm blocking your number" you joke, and she rolls her eyes before getting up and walking towards you excitedly.
"how did it go? isn't he just the sweetest boy? are you guys going out on another date? did you kiss?" she wiggles her eyebrows and you nearly gag.
"mom! oh my gosh, no i did not kiss anton! what kind of girl do you think i am? i don't kiss on the first date" she lets out a small pfft at your response.
"so youâre saying there's a second date?" the tone in her voice is teasing and expectant, and you shut her down again.
"that's not what i meant... and i wouldn't even call that a date. we had a nice time though"Â
"i think you should give him a chance y/n" her hands run up both your arms, giving them a small squeeze when she reaches your shoulders. she gives you a look that almost makes you want to give into her, but you have to stand on your own words.
"i think that, i'm going to go upstairs and go to sleep and forget today happened"
the next day you're making your way back to campus, leaving earlier in the day so you can hang out with sky before she's too tired to listen to your rambling.
"i can't believe you didn't text or call me last night to give me all the juicy details about your date with anton!" sky whines, plopping next to you on the couch with a frown on her face.
"it was not a date, and i wanted to tell you in person that's why i didn't tell you anything! you should be thanking me for being such a thoughtful and considerate friend"Â
"yeah yeah, now let's hear it. how was it? what was he wearing, did he smell good, did you guys kiss-"
"what is up with people thinking i just go around kissing everyone? i did not fucking kiss anton, and i didn't smell him! you weirdo..." you playfully slap her shoulder, and she giggles. "but it was fine. it was more like catching up with an old friend than a date."
"so are you guys friends again? it's been how many years since you've talked?"
"like 3 years now... it's so weird! it was so awkward at the start too, like i didn't know what to say to him and then it being a date that our moms planned just made it even worse"Â
"this is good though! now that you two are friends, i can stop trying to avoid his friend." sheâs smirking now, and you give her the meanest side eye. sheâs been crushing on wonbin for months now, but she didnât want to date one of antons friends for your sake. You did have some mutual friends, but you wouldn't go past the line of friendship with anyone who was associated with anton because you didn't want to cross paths with him more than necessary.Â
"i really can't believe you would take advantage of this situation to hook up with wonbin!"
"i'm just putting it in the air that i would totally fuck antons friend if given the opportunity. and with your little situation you give me the perfect opportunity to shoot my shot" she says matter of factly, and you know that you can't stop her once she has her mind to something so you just sigh.
"you're unbelievable"Â
after debriefing your saturday with sky, you two were still hanging out on the couch watching tv. truthfully, the tv was watching you both since you were both on your phones. while you were scrolling through videos, an unexpected notification pops on the top of your screen.
it was anton. what was he texting you for? technically you two were friends again, but you didn't know you two would be back on a texting basis so soon.
ant: are you back on campus? ant: this is anton btw you: i knew it was you you: but yeah i'm on campus, what's up? ant: can you meet me in the dining hall you: right now? ant: if you're not busy right now, then yeah you: i'll be there in 10
âi'm gonna go to the dining hall to get some snacks, you want anything?âÂ
âjust a soda pleaseeeâ
you go to your room to change your sweatpants to jeans and throw on a hoodie, then you make your way out of your apartment to meet anton. luckily, it wasn't a long walk from where you lived. it was a small apartment off campus that you and sky split. as youâre nearing your destination, you see the boy standing outside on his phone while he waited for you. he looks up and sees you, waving you over once you notice him.Â
âheyâ he breathes out once you reach him, and you put your hands in your hoodie pocket while you look up at him.
âhiâ you give him a small smile, following him as you two walk into the dining hall.
âyou werenât busy or anything, right? i didn't mean to interrupt your afternoonâ he finds a nice table for you two to sit, and you watch as he fidgets with his fingers.Â
âno, no don't worry i wasn't doing anything. but what's up?âÂ
he lets out a sigh and runs his fingers through his hair. he seemed nervous, which was making you nervous. you literally saw him yesterday, what could have happened in the last 24 hours?
âdonât be mad, okay?âÂ
âyou canât tell me not to get mad anton, now i'm preparing to be mad.â you roll your eyes, the concern you had turning into a lack of patience. he should know by now how much of an impatient person you were, never liking suspense or surprises.
âwell um, after yesterday my mom was really happy that we went on a âdateâ,â he puts finger quotes over the word date, and you raise an eyebrow â...and she kept going on and on about us being a coupleâ
âyou told her we werenât dating, right?âÂ
silence. it was your time to sigh now, already knowing where this was headed.
âantonâŚâ your voice drifts, and he jumps to defend himself.
âshe was just so happy! i didn't want to let her down. so sheâs kind of under the assumption that weâre dating.â he puts his head down, probably because he expected you to start yelling at any moment.Â
âdude! you can't just do that without telling me, now my momâs gonna think weâre together tooâ it was your time to sigh now, confusion and a tang of anger brewing through you.Â
âi'm sorry, really. but thats why i needed to see you, i think i have a solution for thisâÂ
âthe solution better be you telling your mom that weâre not together, antonâ your voice is serious, and you fold your arms over your chest.
âwell not exactly, we could just let our moms think weâre a couple whenever we are around them, but we don't have to really be together! that way we can still be friends and they can be happyâ he says it like it's the greatest idea in the world, and you stare at him blankly for a few seconds.
âare you insane? i am not doing that.â a scoff leaves your lips, and he gives you a defeated look before he tries again.
âit's just for our moms! no one has to knowâ itâs honestly comical at this point how he was borderline begging you. but you understand where heâs coming from. if you told your mom that you and anton really werenât dating, you would never hear the end of it and she would keep trying to get you two together.Â
âi'll think about it. but you're buying me lunchâ
you spent the night in your room thinking. it really wasn't a bad idea, but fake or not, did you want to date anton? just for the sake of your moms, and no one else had to know. it would be believable in the eyes of your moms, since you two were friends again you two would be hanging out.Â
i guess i could pretend to date him for a little bit. how often would we be around our parents for it to be a problem? if weâre always on campus, they won't expect to see us that much. you were mumbling to yourself, weighing your options before you decided to text anton your decision.Â
you: i thought about it ant: so? you: it's just for our moms you: and you're buying me food for a month! ant: deal
you have your head in your hands while you try to keep yourself focused for the last 20 minutes of class, bored out of your mind while your professor talks at the slowest pace known to man. you're spacing out now, twirling your pen between your fingers and staring straight forward. letting your eyes drift, they fall on anton. he was sitting in the row in front of you, and from where he was sitting you were able to see his side profile. it almost looked like he was sleeping, which wouldnât surprise you since you were also super bored.Â
how do you go back to being friends with someone after years of not talking? the two of you were cool but you can't help but think that it would be awkward for a little bit until you two were comfortable again. how much has he changed? how much have you changed? what if you have nothing in common anymore, and it was the universe's plan for you two to drift apart?
stop overthinking things, you guys are just friends. there was nothing to overthink, right?
after a few more minutes of arguing with your inner monologue, class is finally over. you're packing up your things when you notice someone is standing over you. you look up to see anton.Â
âdo you want to get lunch? if you don't have any classes after this, of course. it'll be me and some of my friends, you can invite sky too if you want since i know youâre not very familiar with all of themâ he says to you softly. You were kind of hungry now that heâs brought up food, and who would you be to deny a free meal?
âthank god you asked me, i'm starving. let me text sky to see if she wants to joinâ You get out of your seat and follow anton out of the classroom and to the dining hall.
you text sky to come to the dining hall, and that you'll be having lunch with anton. You tell her that wonbin will be there too knowing that sheâll get there faster than the speed of light. and you were right, once you and anton were turning the corner you could see sky out of breath as she came up to you.
ây/n!! no matter what i do, i just can't get my grade up higher than a c in chem! i don't know how anyone is passing that class, i swear i'm going to kill my professor- oh, hi anton!â sky is ranting to you while barely catching her breath, and then she realizes that anton was standing next to you. she gives him a smile, and then gives you a look.Â
if anton wasnât right there, you would hit her and tell her to cut it out. You knew her look was a âhe looks goodâ type of look, and you didn't want him to pick up on her nonsense.
âhey sky, and whoâs your chem professor? i heard mr.jung was a pain in the ass, one of my friends has him for chem tooâ you all make your way to where antons friends are sitting now, eying the group to see if anyone else you know is there.
âi have mr.jung! i swear im gonna kill myself if he doesnât raise my grade.â sky pouts, and you all stand before the table, anton going to introduce you and sky to the group.
âguys this is y/n and skyâ he raises his voice a bit so everyone can hear him, and everyone waves and says hi to you both. ây/n, sky, this is sohee, wonbin, sullyoon, and seunghanâÂ
You already knew sohee and sullyoon, you all were partners in a project for bio last semester and got kind of close. and you didnât know wonbin aside from sky thirsting over him for the last two years, showing you every little thing he posted on social media like he was some celebrity crush. and seunghan you werenât too familiar with, could be simply because you don't have any classes with him in it and you don't know much of the friends anton has made since you two talked last.
you finally take a seat next to anton, sky and sohee sitting across from you. his friends are cool, you admit as you make good conversation with everyone at the table. you didnât have a real friend group on campus, you mainly only talked to sky along with a few other people but they were all a part of different crowds. so it was nice that anton let you join in with his group of friends.Â
âdo you want to get your food now? i can get it for you if you want to stay here,â anton leans over to talk to you, loud enough for only you to hear.Â
âno its fine ill come withâ you turn to face him and you two let the table know youâre getting food and youâll be right back.Â
you two grab trays and fill up your plates, now going to the line to pay for the food. You decide now you should quickly run over some rules about how this fake relationship is going to go, since youâre hanging out with his friends you don't want any suspicions about what your relationship with anton was.
âweâre keeping this whole thing a secret from our friends, right? â you ask him, and he takes a moment to think before he responds.
âif you want to keep it a secret then sure, it might be weird to tell people that weâre faking a relationship, and that way we don't have to fake it in front of our friendsâ he lets out a soft laugh, and you nod in agreement.Â
âthatâs true, telling sky that youâre my boyfriend would raise all kinds of hellâ
Unfortunately, neither you or anton realized sohee was walking up behind you both and was able to pick up on the last bits of your conversation. intrigued, he butts in to stand in between you two. âhey guys, what's all this talk about boyfriend and girlfriend? You two dating?â he smirks, and you and anton stare at him and then at each other in shock.
this cannot be happening.
âWhat?â you let out a nervous chuckle âno, weâre notâ it comes out faster than you can process, and you look at sohee with a smile hoping that he believes you. but he doesn't. not even a little bit.
he squints, giving you a look and then giving the same look to anton and then looking back at you. âYou were just saying that anton was your boyfriend though.â you look past sohee to look at anton, he was paying for your food while you were being interrogated by sohee. Your body is heating up with anxiety, realizing nothing you say could get this boy to drop the topic. curse him for being so nosey.
âWe just haven't told anyone yet, we didnât want to make it a big deal.â anton chimes in before you could think of a reasonable response, and now you and sohee were looking at anton with wide eyes.
âthis is great! we all thought there had to be something going on with you two,â heâs teasing you two now, and all you could do was sigh. this entire situation taking a sharp turn and you know that sohee was going to tell everyone, and there was no escape from being antons fake girlfriend.Â
Why did he have to tell sohee that you two were together? again, doing things without letting you know first. and heâs a bit of a loudmouth, so you know when heâs walking away that heâs going to tell the table that you two were together.
âWhat the fuck anton? Why did you do thatâ You whine, grabbing your food tray from him while you make your way back to the table.
You honestly don't even want to talk to him right now. You were annoyed, you were just agreeing that you two would keep it a secret?
anton follows close behind you, understanding your anger since he didnât realize what he was saying until he said it. truthfully, his mind went into fight or flight for a moment. the easiest thing he could think of to get sohee to leave you two alone was to just give into what he was saying. obviously, he didnât realize the gravity of his words until after the fact.Â
as you two approach the table, everyone is looking at you guys and smiling. You want to scream. this seriously cannot be my life.Â
âthe love birds are back!!â Wonbin cheers, and the rest of the table follows along with whistles and cheers.
ây/n, why didn't you tell me! you had me thinking we hated himâ sky pouts as you sit down, and antons ears perk up at this. you hated him? he took note in his mind to ask you about that later.
âyou guys could have told us, y'know. we would have figured it out anyways. the tension is definitely thereâ sullyoon comments while she takes a bite of her food. the rest of the table nods in agreement, and you let out a small scoff.
What tension are they talking about? the few encounters with anton that youâve had with him before this weekend were definitely tense, but only because it was awkward. Whatever tension they thought they felt was out of pure delusion.Â
You don't know how much more of this you could put up with.
the week went by slowly. almost too slow for your liking. it was finally friday, and your mom is texting you to come home for the weekend again, and to bring anton with you.Â
truthfully, youâve been ignoring him all week. after that little stunt he pulled on monday, after you finished your food you lied and told everyone you had to get ready for your next class. it wasnât a full lie since you did have a class, but it wasn't for another hour and a half. You just couldn't bear being at that table, and being around him. he texted you once you left to ask if you were alright, and you just gave him a simple âim fineâ. he texted you again on tuesday, and then yesterday but you ignored them. You probably should respond, before he starts asking sky or sullyoon about you. and it would probably be a good idea to stop avoiding antons friends as well when you pass by them on campus. it wouldnât be a good look for you or for anton, and you don't want to come off as rude to anyone
as you were packing some clothes along with your basic necessities to go to your moms house, your phone starts to ring. You walk over to where you set it to look at who was calling, and of course it was the person you were thinking about. You thought about declining it, but you decided to answer.Â
âWhat do you want, anton.â your voice was monotone and feigning annoyance, not really in the mood to talk to him.Â
âUm, are you doing anything right now?â he sounds nervous, and you decide maybe you should relax and talk to him calmly.Â
You might be upset with him right now, but you canât be mean to him even if you tried. he was always sweet to you, so it wouldnât be fair to talk to him like that if he wasnât going to talk back.Â
âiâm just packing up some stuff to go to my moms. youâre going too, right? she wants to have a dinner or something, with us and your parentsâÂ
âyeah, that's why i called. im actually here to pick you up, it would be better if we showed up together than separatelyâ he chuckles nervously and you hum in response.Â
âoh! okay well⌠i should hurry up then. i'll be outside in a few minutes.â you say quickly, and he lets out a soft âokayâ before ending the call. You shove everything into your little bag, not needing a lot since you already had things at your moms and you were only going to be there for the weekend. saying bye to sky, you put your shoes on and walk out to meet with anton outside.Â
once you push through the front doors of your apartment building, you see anton leaning on the door of his car while he waits for you. he sees you, and hurries to catch you and help you with your bag. it wasn't even a heavy bag, but the gesture was nice. and of course heâs opening the door to the passengers seat for you, making sure youâre fully seated before closing the door and making his way into the driver's seat.
heâs putting his seatbelt on when you decide to break the silence. âsorry for ignoring you all week. i was just kind of shaken by everything that happened mondayâ your voice is soft, playing with your fingers while you talk.
he doesn't say anything for a few seconds, and you start to wonder if he was mad at you. You couldnât blame him, you would be mad if someone ignored you for a week too.Â
âitâs fine, i figured you wanted some space. iâm sorry i told sohee that we were dating, i kind of panicked and i didnt know how else to get him to leave us alone. and i didnt think he would go and tell everyone, so iâm sorry.â
âitâs okay, anton. i can't really be mad at you, because i don't even know if i would have said anything better than you did. it just caught me off guardâ youâre looking at him now, shifting in the seat a bit so you weren't turning your neck too much. he looks at you and smiles softly, going back to looking at the road.Â
a comfortable silence fell between the two of you as he drove, the dreaded talk about monday relieving the awkward tension in the vehicle. as he turns into the neighborhood, you sigh knowing what's going to unfold once you step foot through the front door of your mothers house.
With the combination of your mom and antons mom being crazy about you two being together, you were glad that his dad was the only normal one. he was completely fine with you two just being good friends and you were so grateful for that. often, he would have to be the peacemaker in the room telling mrs.lee and your mom to calm down and let you two be. Â
âi think we should make some⌠ground rules for this whole thing. for now and for back on campus.â you state as he pulls into the driveway, and once he parks the car he shifts so he can face you.Â
âi agree, anything you have in mind?âÂ
You two come up with some standard rules, some things are a hard no and some are subject to change.Â
rule #1- don't let anyone know its a fake relationship: it would be embarrassing if anyone knew that rule #2- keep it believable, but nothing extreme rule #3- adding onto number 2, keep the pda and flirting to a safe minimum, and no kissing rule #4- no dating/flirting with other people: fake or not, if people think youâre in a relationship do not try to get into another one. rule #5- anton owes you food for 3 months for putting you into this situation. its only fair! rule #6- the most important, do not catch feelings. You guys were just friends! two friends, pretending to date in front of your family and friends. it was all pretend though, no feelings were actually involved, right?
dinner went well, sitting next to anton while the adults talked about their own things and occasionally asking questions to the both of you. luckily not a lot of relationship topics were brought up. You two were able to have your own conversations throughout dinner, which reminded you of the dinners you all would have throughout your childhood.Â
once everyone was finished eating, anton helped your mother in the kitchen while you sat in the living room with his parents.Â
ây/n, i am so happy that you and anton are finally a couple! i feel like iâve been waiting for this all my lifeâ mrs.lee cheers, and you smile along with her. âisn't he just the sweetest boy?â
âheâs very sweet, probably the sweetest iâve been withâ you tell her and she's cheesing so hard. honestly, making the relationship believable wasn't going to be hard around mrs.lee and your mom, because you have no complaints about anton. he truly was the sweetest boy. even if you two werenât really dating, he was respectful and very gentlemanly.
âWe have his father to thank for that,â mrs.lee nudges at her husband, and he just gives a small chuckle at the comment.
â i always taught him to be respectful. but truthfully the reason heâs so sweet to y/n is because he likes youâ mr.lee starts, and you have to remember to not reject his words since you were trying to keep up an act here.Â
all you could do was let out an awkward laugh, not sure what to say to add onto the conversation. âmaybe, but heâs sweet to everyoneâ you try to act humble, and mr.lee gives you a look that tells you that you were wrong.
âhe may be nice to everyone, but i don't think you realize just how differently he treats you than anyone else. even when you two were younger and friends, he was always the nicest to you. and don't tell him i told you this, but he had a little crush on you back in middle and highschool.â he whispers the last part, and you feel your heart drop to your feet.Â
âh-he did? i had no ideaâŚâ words coming out soft now, you drop your head to stop the blood from rushing into your face.Â
âhe would always come home and tell us about something you did that day. he got over it after a while, but i bet heâs so happy that you two are finally together!â mrs.lee swoons, and you suddenly feel lightheaded.Â
this is all too much. anton used to like you? how come he never said anything? You excused yourself from his parents, and made your way to the kitchen.Â
âhey mom, iâm a little tired so im gonna head upstairs.â You walk in to her drying and putting away dishes, while anton washes them. he looks over you, noticing the tone in your voice along with the look on your face wasnât because of fatigue, but that something was wrong.Â
âokay baby, let me know if you need anything.â she walks to the end of the kitchen island where you were standing, giving you a hug goodnight. âanton, why don't you go with y/n upstairs? it's getting late, and i can finish up in the kitchen.â she turns from you to look at the boy scrubbing away at a pot, and he stops dead in his tracks at her words.Â
âi was just going to head back with my parents once we finished,â he starts, looking at your mom and then at you, not wanting to intrude. he did want to talk to you, but he didnât want to be in your space if you didn't want him there.Â
âdon't be silly, anton! You two are a couple and are old enough now, i don't have to separate you twoâ she laughs, and you and anton just stare at each other awkwardly. You were going to tell her to let it go, but because of the unique situation you two were in it was probably the best idea to follow your moms orders. You motion for him to follow you, you both saying goodnight to your mom and then to his parents. Youâre walking towards the stairs to go to your room, when anton tells you that heâll be back to get his bag out of his car.
While he grabs his things, you make your way up to your room. You leave the door open, just in case anton doesn't remember which room was yours. Walking to your window, you open it and stick your head out so you can get some fresh air.
What a night, youâre thinking to yourself. You need to calm down. With what happened on monday and what antons parents were telling you earlier, you were just too in your head. too much was happening too fast. Why was this affecting you so much? and with that you hear footsteps coming into your room and then a door closing.
âare you alright? You looked a little flushed downstairsâ the soft voice calls to you, and you know that its anton.Â
You take a deep breath before turning to face him. âi'm fine. i am now, at least. i just kind of felt bad for lying right in my mom and your parents' faces. i had to get away from themâ your voice is low while you speak, looking to the floor once again to avoid his eyes. he takes note of your body language, seeing that youâre a bit tense and awkward now but he doesnât want to pry.Â
âif you want i can sleep on the floor,â heâs placing his bag on the chair by your desk, grabbing something to change into for bed.Â
âno, that's too uncomfortable. You can sleep on the bedâ you say it in a way where its clear there's no room for debate, and he nods.Â
anton would never admit it to you, but he found you severely intimidating. even when you two were younger, he was always intimidated by you. You carried yourself well, you didnât take bullshit from anyone, always got your way, and you were stubborn. he was surprised your personalities didn't clash, he felt like you wouldn't want to be friends with someone like him. but truthfully that's what brought you two together. it was like fire and ice, you were the fire and he was the ice to cool you down.
but with being the ice, he was too scared to touch you in fear that he would melt.Â
another week passes by, and you feel like you were going insane. You don't know what it is, but every time you see anton, your heart starts racing, your face heats up along with the rest of your body.Â
When he holds your hand or rests his hand on your thigh when you two were out with friends, you had to keep your composure to the best of your ability. especially when he would subconsciously graze his thumb across the back of your hand, the action small and going unnoticed to the naked eye, but feeling too intimate for you and you would pull your hand away.Â
the days that he would come over to your apartment or you would go to his dorm to hang out after classes, you found yourself feeling nervous. especially when you two were at your place, seeing him in your room and in your bed had you feeling like jelly. sometimes he would fall asleep before you, and you wouldnât wake him up. it would be late, and you would feel bad for waking him up and making him go back to his dorm. You were comfortable enough around him anyways to tell him to move, and he never slept too close to you throughout those nights. a deep part of you wished he did, though. but you don't want to think about crossing that path yet.Â
a few more days passed, and on wednesday, you went with him to his swim practice so you two could go back to your apartment and order takeout once he was finished. You brought a book with you since you didnât know much about swimming, and you wanted to keep yourself occupied while you waited.Â
an hour of practice goes by and lets just say, not a single page of the book you brought with you was read. not like you would be able to focus on reading anyways, seeing how he swam in the water was a lot more entertaining than you thought. along with how he looked when he pushed himself out of the water, full body on display. his broad shoulders, his toned arms and stomach, the droplets of water dripping from his hair down his back, the way he throws his head back to move his hair out of his face-
Wait a damn minute.
You needed to leave, feeling hot suddenly. Were you really sitting here thirsting over anton? of course, you always found him attractive. You would be silly if you didn't. but you never had any thoughts about him. and you don't want right now, in the campus pool, to be where you start. You walk down the bleachers, trying to think of an excuse of why youâre leaving the building.
ây/n? are you leaving?â anton catches you before you could find him, you turn around to see him speed walking towards you and you almost let out a giggle seeing he hasn't taken his goggles off.
âitâs just kind of humid in here. i'm gonna sit outside until you finish, okay?â you clutch your bag a bit tighter, him standing wet and shirtless in front of you is making you nervous. heâs peering down at you, smiling lightly before he lets you know heâll be out in around 30 minutes.Â
You nearly trip on your way out, feeling refreshed once you finally escape the pool room air. You take your phone out of your pocket, debating on texting sky. she didnât know that you and antons relationship was all a facade, so what exactly could you tell her? should you just tell her the truth? You couldn't do that, that would be breaking the rules. and who knows what she would do if she found out. You had to mask it with something else in order to get your feelings off your chest.
You: sky You: sky pls You: i'm going insane sky: what what what You: okay so⌠yk me and anton sky: iâm aware You: well weâve been together for about two weeks and some days You: and there's been some tension You: that wasn't there before sky: like sexual? sky: you havent fucked that boy yet? You: omfg You: no! we haven't gotten there yet⌠sky: so ur telling me, you've been dating a fine ass man⌠sky: and you havent fucked him⌠for what reason? sky: better than me y/n⌠i would have been jumped his bones You: sky you are so unserious You: but help me out here! do i tell him? or do i just go for it sky: i say talk to him first because what if he isn't ready You: ur so right sky ily sky: lyt babes ;)
Using sex fantasies as a mask for your feelings was definitely a choice, but it helped you out regardless. of course, now you have more things to think about. did you really want to date anton? You told yourself you didn't before, but now you weren't so sure. he was the full package, everything you could ask for in a guy. so there was really nothing stopping you. but you two were friends.Â
he also used to like you back in grade school. key word: used to. What if he completely got over you and wouldnât even think about dating you now? this was a tough situation, and you don't know how much longer you could keep this up with repressed feelings.Â
after 10 more minutes of overthinking, you can feel a presence behind you so you quickly turn your body to see anton right behind you.Â
âYou ready?â heâs looking down at you again, hair slightly covering his eyes because of the beanie he wore. his body once again covered up by the baggy hoodie along with the black sweatpants he wore. You would never be able to guess how built he really was under the clothes he chose to wear.
You realize you might be staring a little too hard for a little too long so you give him a nod. âYeah, let's goâ and heâs taking you by the hand while you follow him to his car.
he drives you two to the nearest food place you guys could agree on. You two agree on getting wings for tonight, and then make your way to your apartment. once you enter, you see sky sitting in the living room. she gives you a look only you two would be able to understand, with anton right behind you.
sky greets you two, and anton greets her back while you take off your shoes and then make your way into the kitchen. You grab two sodas, and walk out to where anton was standing. he was usually a bit awkward around your apartment if you werenât telling him where to go, too scared that he would touch something he shouldnât.Â
following you to your room with the food, anton shuts the door softly behind him. the boy was already in comfortable clothes, taking a shower before he left the locker rooms after practice and made sure that he brought something he wouldn't be uncomfortable in. You were still wearing a pair of jeans and a cute crop top under a zip up hoodie.Â
âi'm gonna change in the bathroom, you can pull the food out and put something on the tv,â you tell the boy sitting on your bed, and he hums in response while you leave the room. Walking over to the bathroom down the hall, you take this time to relax yourself.Â
You quickly change into a pair of sweats and an old tshirt, and you walk further down the hall to the living room to quickly talk to sky.Â
âare you fucking him tonight? let me know so i can put in my headpho- ow!â you pinched her arm before she could finish her sentence. Â
âi am not fucking him! i just came out here to tell you that i'm gonna talk to him about itâ
âokay, but if there's a change of plans let me know!â
truthfully you were going to tell him about your feelings, just not tonight. maybe friday, you got invited to a party that sohee was throwing at his frat and you know that anton will be there too.
You walk back into your room now, seeing the food laid out and a movie ready for you as you get situated next to anton on your bed. he put on some action movie, which was a genre you both equally enjoyed. being around anton was comfortable. You two were able to sit in silence, laugh, and talk without any judgments.Â
this could either end really good or really, really bad.
it was friday. the day you would tell anton about your feelings. Was it a good idea to tell him at a party? probably not, but the influence of alcohol might help you build up the much needed courage. What could possibly go wrong though, right? the worst he could say is no, and you two could just go back to being friends and drop the fake dating act.Â
You put on your best party dress, it was black and had the right amount of cleavage and rode up just enough for it to not be too skimpy. knowing how crazy soheeâs parties get, you wanted to make sure that you were dressed for the occasion along with getting antons attention.Â
sky calls you over, letting you know sheâs ready to go. You ride in her car to the party, sheâs known as the designated driver for you and your friends since she was the only one who didn't like to drink. What would you do without her?
right as you walk into the house, seunghan is at the door handing you a shot glass. You down it without question, making a face at the liquid burning down your throat. You would love to get absolutely shitfaced right now, but you want to find anton. Youâre pushing through the crowd of people before you see him, heâs standing close to the patio window, red solo cup in hand while he talks to sohee and some other guys youâre not familiar with.Â
âhey anton,â you look at him happily, and he doesnât even glance at you while he continues his conversation. Weird, heâs never blatantly ignored you like that, but maybe he thought you were someone else. You call him again and he finally looks at you. he glances at your outfit and then back to your face, little to no reaction to your presence.
âhi y/nâ he looks at you with a look you canât quite decipher, and you feel a slight tinge of pain in your chest at this. why was he suddenly so emotionless around you? was he drunk? âcan i talk to you, it'll be quick?â he says loud enough for just you to hear, and he excuses himself from his friends while he leads you to a quiet, dimly lit hallway.
âWhat's up?â
and that's when he lays it on you.Â
âi think that we should end this.â
You nearly drop to your knees when you hear those words come out of his mouth. âhuh?â is all you could muster up, playing it off as you couldn't hear him due to the party.
âthis whole fake dating thing, i think we should end it. Weâre just friends, right? not like we have feelings for each other or anything⌠and itâs just too much work and pressure to keep up with a fake relationshipâ heâs not looking at you now, and all you can do is stand there in shock.
it takes a minute for your brain to start working again, finally able to process your own thoughts and words.
âright. Youâre right. i guess itâs for the best if we end it. iâll um, iâll see you aroundâ and youâre walking away so fast anton didn't have a chance to say anything else and to stop yourself from crying in front of everyone at this party. You quickly find sky, interrupting her flirt session with wonbin to tell her you guys need to go. sheâs holding your hand tight through the crowd and out the door, and once youâre in her car youâre letting it all out. the sobs are uncontrollable now, everything you held in 3 minutes ago just coming out.
You tell sky everything on the way home, feeling like there was no reason to keep anything a secret anymore. âthat asshole! iâll kill him, i really willâ sky is heated now, she couldnât stand seeing you like this and she couldnât stand knowing who made you like this.Â
âheâs never talked to me like that. even when heâs annoyed at me! heâs never looked at me with absolutely no emotion⌠i don't understand what happenedâ you start to think out loud once you two are inside your apartment, tears dried and the confusion settling in. youâre pacing around the living room and you feel your phone vibrate in your purse. You pull it out to see anton calling you, and you press decline.Â
Whatever he has to say, you don't want to hear it. You should have known not to say anything. maybe if you had just waited until tomorrow. but if he wanted to end things, what would he have done if you confessed?
sky's phone was ringing now, she picks it up and is nearly yelling into her phone the second she presses answer.Â
âhello?... Yes, weâre fine. What the fuck is up with anton, man?âŚokay⌠i don't think that's going to happen for a while⌠okay bye.â she sets her phone down, and her eyes soften as she watches you continue to pace the living room. âthat was wonbin on the phone, he said anton was a little drunk and he wants to talk to you when you can. theyâre trying to sober him up now because he started drinking more after we left. What an idiot,â sheâs next to you now, rubbing circles on your back while you stare at the wall.Â
Yeah, what an idiot. the both of you were idiots, it seems.
another week goes by, and youâve completely shut everyone out. You ignore texts, you skip classes, you don't even leave the apartment to get food. thank goodness for doordash.Â
You check your phone, looking at all of the missed calls and messages from the people worried about you. one name sticks out the most, but that's the one name you don't want to talk to right now. avoiding him like he was the plague, along with any of his friends to make sure that he doesnât hear about you. Â
Unknown information to you, but sky was out. she was out with the enemy, to be more specific. she had seen anton in the courtyard with wonbin and seunghan, and she made a beeline for the boy. he noticed her almost instantly, preparing for a well deserved lashing or maybe even a slap to the face, but she grabbed him by his forearm and dragged him to a quiet side of the courtyard where she could talk freely.
âYou really fucked up, anton.â she's speaking softly. âshe hasnt left her room in 5 days. i don't know what to do to get her out.âÂ
âiâve tried texting and calling her every day, but she doesn't respond.â his voice quieter than usual as he tries to explain himself.
âwell can you blame her? you shut her feelings down before she could even get them out!â sheâs quick to your defense, which was one of the reasons you loved sky. she always had your back.
âi⌠it's not like i don't have feelings for her, because shit, iâve liked that girl since we were 13. but i didn't know that she felt the same way and i was too scared to ruin our friendshipâ he wanted to cry, ruining something that he wanted so badly with his own thoughts.Â
he knew that the fake dating would resurface old feelings, but along with the feelings came the other emotions that come with liking you. he was nervous around you, he was too scared that you wouldnât like him back and that you were only doing this because he put you in this situation. Which was another reason he was too nervous to confess, because this relationship was fake. You two were friends who were just pretending to date. and neither of you were getting anything out of it, so why would you develop romantic feelings for him? he didn't think you liked him, and to protect his heart he had to let you go. but the moment he saw your face drop at that party with tears threatening to fall, he knew he made a mistake. he never wanted to see you make that face again, especially not if it was caused by him.Â
âYou could have maybe asked her how she felt about you two before you just acted on a made up scenario in your head? like do you even think before you say thingsâŚâ her voice is filled with confusion and annoyance, not understanding how someone could sabotage their own relationships the way he was. and youâre her best friend, so she felt obligated to get some answers for you.Â
âi was in panic mode! i couldnât handle being her fake boyfriend anymore when i wanted to be with her for real. do you think sheâll hear me out?â if he had to get on his knees and beg you to give him another chance, he would. he couldn't bear not being with you, and he felt like heâd rather crawl into a corner and die than living his life without you again.Â
âi don't know, sheâs doing everything in her power to avoid you right now. but you better fix this mess or i'll have your head on a stickâ she smiles at the end of her threat, reaching to pat anton on the head before walking way.Â
he was going to make things right.Â
With a deep breath, anton is knocking on your front door. You were eating some leftovers from some food you ordered the day before, not bothering to order food today. sky must have forgotten her keys again, you think as you walk over to the front door.Â
âsky you can't keep forgetting your ke- oh.â the one person you dreaded seeing is standing at your door with a bouquet of flowers, and a bag of your favorite candy. if you weren't so upset right now, you probably would have swooned over him coming over unannounced.Â
âcan we talk?â he takes in your appearance, you were wearing a hoodie along with a pair of shorts and slippers. You wouldn't say you looked a mess, but you would have put yourself together a bit more if you had known that anyone other than sky would see you today. his eyes are soft, filled with hope that youâll let him in.
âi don't really want to talk to you right nowâ your face is blank, not wanting to show any sort of emotions. You could honestly cry, but you had to stay strong for yourself.Â
âplease? it's really important,â it almost comes out as a plea, and you nearly drop the cold act. seeing him at your door like this, maybe you should let him in? not that you wanted to hear whatever he has to say, but he came all this way.Â
âfine, but make it quickâ grabbing the flowers and candy from him, you let him in and you go to the kitchen to put the flowers in a vase. he sits on the end of your couch, and he's tapping his fingers on his knees while he waits for you to walk into the living room.Â
When youâre seated on the other end of the couch, you peer your head over to look at anton, who was almost visibly shaking from nervousness.Â
âokay, what do you want?â the cold act is back, wanting to hear him out before you fold. the gesture of him coming with flowers kind of gave away what was coming from him, but you didn't want to get excited too fast. he hurt your feelings last week, and you werenât going to let it run past you that easily just because he came to you pleading with flowers. You could, and hell you definitely wanted to, but you were stronger than that.Â
something about anton made you so weak. normally a strong stubborn person, melting and giving in to whatever he says. You don't know how he could have this effect on you, no one else is able to make you putty in their hands the way anton does. but you can't let him know that. not now, at least.
âi need to apologize for everything. not just for last week, but for putting you into this situation in the first place. when this all started, our moms setting us up like that, i didnt think much of it. but then hanging out with you that day brought back so many memories and i didnt want to stray away from you again. so i lied to my mom, and then i brought up the fake dating idea to you. You probably never knew this, but iâve had a crush on you since we were in middle school. it went away in junior year when we stopped talking, because you had gotten a boyfriend and i was so upset that you were with someone else. i was too scared to confess to you then, and even now i'm terrified. talking to you again resurfaced all of my old feelings for you and i thought that us being in a fake relationship would bring us closer together. and then i panicked, because i thought you wouldn't like me back. We were getting so close and i was too scared of rejection, i couldnât tell if you had any feelings for me in that way, so i thought ending it now would stop me from getting hurtâ he pauses, and you take in everything heâs saying.Â
tears that you tried to fight back were falling, you couldn't stop them while you listened to every word the boy beside you said knowing that he was being completely genuine. You could barely look at him, seeing that he looked like he was fighting back tears himself.Â
âand seeing you at the party, i was planning on talking to you after the party but you looked so pretty i knew i wouldn't be able to stick by your side as a fake boyfriend when all i wanted was to be your real boyfriend. i didn't mean to hurt you, seriously. it nearly killed me when i saw you look at me so heartbroken. i never want to make you upset like that again.â he was crying too now, and somehow the two of you were no longer on either side of the couch but right in the middle. not touching, but close enough to feel each other's presence. after a minute of calming yourself down, you try to find the right words to say to the boy next to you.
âYouâre an idiot, lee antonâ is all you could muster up, almost laughing. You sniffle, and you look at anton while he still has his head down. âYouâre really an idiot, because how could i not like you back? iâve never been around a guy as sweet as you, and i might not have seen it a couple years ago but i see it now. Yâknow, the other weekend when we were at my moms and you were helping clean up⌠your parents had told me about your old crush on me. thatâs why i was so shaken up, because i was starting to realize my own feelings for you.â heâs finally looking at you now, tears wiped away and an almost smile on his face.Â
âthey told you about that? i wanted to be the one to tell youâ his face was a bright red from embarrassment, his parents exposing his past crush on you was not something he would expect from them. And the fact that you werenât repulsed by his old crush caught him off guard. Of course, you have feelings for him now, but knowing that he liked you when you two were cringey teenagers? You should be laughing at him and calling him crazy.Â
â after all the times i friendzoned you during that time? i don't know how you did it. i guess i deserved the rejection last friday as a payback from all the times i shut you down.â humoring the situation was the best thing you could do to ease the tension in the room, and you both chuckle softly at your comment.Â
he takes your hand into his, shifting his body so hes completely facing you, and you look down at your hands before looking back at his face. he was back to looking serious, with those soft pleading eyes burning into yours.Â
ây/n, i want you to know that i like you. i like you so much, it physically hurts. i never want to be away from you, and i never want to hurt you. and i want us to be together, for real this time. no bullshit, no rules, no more confusion. Youâre the most amazing girl in the world and i can't imagine living a life without you in it. if youâll let me, can i be your boyfriend?â you want to cry again, this was the cutest confession youâve ever heard. You take a little bit too long to respond and his mouth is slowly turning into a frown, thinking he's about to be rejected.
âYes, anton. You can be my boyfriendâ you squeeze his hand and now heâs tearing up again. he feels like the happiest person on the planet, finally getting to be with you in the way he wanted. Happy tears stream down your face, and you pull anton into a hug, holding him tightly. He holds you just as tight, breath hitting your neck as he breathes in the scent of your neck.Â
âWe need to go out and celebrate! I wanna take you out, on a real date, and then we can tell everyone that weâre officially together, and-â He had pulled out of your hug so he could list off everything he wanted to do with you, and you had to put your hands on his shoulders to keep him grounded. Even though you love his rambling, his words were coming out quicker than his thoughts and you had to calm him down.
âWoah, let's just hang out tonight? We can go out tomorrow. And we should wait to tell everyone, sky probably still wants to rip your head off and we don't need sohee or anyone else talkingâ he nods, and heâs still smiling from ear to ear while he looks at you. Â
âYouâre right, i'm just so happy.â he has his hands on your knees now, and his eyes go from where his hands lay, your lips, and your eyes. You trail your eyes to his lips and to his neck, then back at his lips. It was like you both wanted the same thing, but both were too shy to say something. Subconsciously you were slowly closing the gap, his body leaning into yours as well. Noses almost touching, you look into his eyes and give his shoulder a small squeeze to motion him to make a move.Â
âCan i kiss you?â you can feel the words leaving his lips on your own, and a small desperate please leaves you before the gap is finally closed and his lips are on yours. It was a soft kiss, the both of you getting used to each other. His lips were so soft, and they molded perfectly with yours. You felt his tongue swipe your bottom lip, and you let him into your mouth while you kissed him harder. His hands that were on your knees have moved, one hand resting on your hip while the other made it up your body and cupping the back of your neck to keep you on him. Your hands also snake into his hair, playing with the strands while you two softly make out.Â
Anton felt like he was in heaven. Kissing you was a dream come true, and it topped anything he could ever imagine. He kissed you softly but full of desperation, like you were going to vanish out of thin air. His grip on your waist got tighter, slightly pulling your body into his and you gasped into his mouth. Pulling away, you look at how dazed anton was. heâs breathing hard, lips swollen and hair disheveled. You didnât mean to work him up so much from just kissing you, but you can't deny that you werenât a little worked up yourself. Kissing him was like something youâve never felt before. A kiss filled with love and desperation was something you havenât felt before, and it was something you hope you never get used to. You want to kiss him like that every time, all the time.  Â
âDo you want to go to my room?â you breathe out, and he nods his head happily. You stand up, grabbing his hand to bring you to his room.Â
Your body was heating up, feeling slightly nervous. Heâs been in your room before, but as your boyfriend? It was like something in the air shifted. A new tension filled the room once you two stepped inside your room, you closed the door softly before antons hands were on you and pressing your body to the door. You gasp at his sudden control, looking up at him and you see how dark his eyes have gotten. With one hand on your waist and one on the back of your neck, he pulls you in for another kiss. It wasnât soft like before but still filled with desperation, like he was starved of your lips. Your hands move to his hair and onto his bicep, gripping his arm to hold yourself up while he kisses you eagerly.Â
Heâs strong enough to keep you up himself, but you feel like if you don't hold tightly to him you would melt. The hand on your waist pulls you into him some more, and heâs moving you both from the door to your bed. It was a bit of a struggle getting there, neither of you pulling away to see where you were going. Stumbling on each other's feet, you finally make it to the bed. Only pulling away so he could let you down softly, and you move back to the end of the bed before heâs climbing on top of you. Slotting his own legs between yours, his lips are attaching to your neck and you move your head to the side so he has better access.Â
You can't ignore the way his thigh is right on your core, not moving but you feel the heat between your legs with how heâs sucking and biting little marks on your neck. His hands rest on your waist under the hoodie you wore, and you lift them just slightly to get a tiny bit of friction going. With every gasp and whimper you let out, it goes through his ears and straight to his dick.Â
Anton feels you moving, and your own leg that was between his was just right below his growing hard on. He shifts so both his legs are between yours, pressing his core into yours and you let out a moan at the pressure.Â
You pull at his hair, taking your other hand to run it down his chest and down to his stomach. When your hands stop by his waist, tugging at his shirt indicating that you want it off. âAnton, take your shirt offâ you groan out, noticing how heâs too lost in you to notice.Â
He quickly pulls away, lips and hands leaving your body. You almost felt cold, not having his body heat on you for those quick seconds. Heâs sitting up so he can remove his shirt and you stare him down intently as you watch his muscles flex. Biting your lip, you run your hand down his bare chest, taking in the body above you.Â
âCan i take this off you?â heâs tugging on your hoodie now, and you nod before he helps you sit up slightly to remove the clothing off you before laying you back down. He gasps when he realizes you didnât have a bra on this whole time, and he instantly attaches his hands to your breasts and gives them a squeeze. You would think this was his first time seeing a woman naked the way he gawks at you, but heâs just so in awe of how beautiful you were.Â
Leaning back down, his lips are back on yours. It's hot and messy, you can barely breathe the way he touches you. His kisses are trailing back down to your neck, and then his lips find your nipple. You whimper feeling his tongue flick the sensitive bud, one hand tweaking the other. His other hand makes its way down to the hem of your shorts, slightly dipping into your shorts but not enough. Like he was waiting for you to tell him what to do, he left his fingers right there even if you rutted your hips into his hand as a way to get him to touch you. He still wasn't letting up, and you knew that he really wasn't going to touch you unless you told him.
âAnton,â you whine, and he takes his lips off your nipple. His breath on the bud making you shiver, and you whine out again. Â
âWhat's wrong, baby?â You couldnât tell if his voice was laced with fake or genuine concern, and it was killing you. You were probably fully soaked through your panties and shorts, the ache between your thighs getting almost unbearable.Â
âWant you to touch meâ a whine slips past your lips, and you move the hand that was on his chest over where his own rests under the hem of your shorts.Â
âYeah?â he teases, finally putting his hand fully down your pants to rub you through your panties. You let out an eager mhm along with a fast nod, his fingers lightly grazing over your clit. You try to lift your hips up, but he takes his free hand to hold your hips down. âGonna take my time with you, babyâÂ
Moaning at his words, you moan again when his fingers finally slip past your panties and run through your slit. Collecting your arousal on his fingers, and he lets out a soft chuckle. âYouâre so wet,â
âStop teasing, ton. Need youâ you swirl your hips around his fingers, trying to get him to use them. He might be putty in your hands outside the bedroom, but it was the complete opposite right now. He likes seeing you like this. Weak under him, begging for some type of release. He finally obliges, his thumb circling your clit softly while he slips two fingers into you. You moan, the ache in your core slowly subsiding.Â
He sits up so he can see your reactions fully. Your eyes were fluttering shut, mouth open slightly from the pleasure he was giving you. He moved his fingers a bit faster, and adding a bit more pressure onto your clit which made you moan. Your hand that was on his wrist gripped him tightly. He was making you feel so good, and he looked so good while doing it. With your half open eyes, you could see him focused on your cunt. His eyes were glossed over, looking from his hand that was in your pants, your face, your tits, then back to his hand.Â
He could honestly cum in his pants from the sight. Your breathing was labored and you were clenching on his fingers tighter, and he could tell that you were getting close. You usually last longer, but he made you feel so good it was overwhelming. And with how hot he was, it was hard for you to hold out.Â
âCum for me, y/n. Make a mess on my fingersâ His words were so vulgar, but his voice was so soft. With a few more harsh circles to your clit, your back was arched off the bed while your orgasm hit you. Nails digging into antons wrist while he continued thrusting his fingers in you to help you ride out your orgasm. Other hand was in the sheets, grabbing onto whatever your fingers could pick up.Â
When your breathing goes back to normal, anton pulls his fingers out of you and out of your pants, taking them into his mouth. It was so messy, and you moan watching him taste you on his fingers. He hums, pulling his fingers out of his mouth with a pop before running his hands down your thighs.Â
âYou okay?â for a quick minute the soft boyfriend you knew was back, checking to make sure you were okay and if you wanted to continue. You give him a weak nod, eyes struggling to stay open. Your hands are pulling at the hem of his pants now, and heâs stepping off the bed to rid himself of the last of his clothing.Â
Through your half hazy gaze, you watch him taking off his pants along with his boxers. Your eyes nearly fall out of their sockets when you see his cock spring out of his pants. Holy shit, he was big. You knew he would be because he was just so big everywhere else, but it still took you by surprise. He gets back on the bed, settling between your legs once again.Â
âHow do you want me?â you ask him sweetly, and he bites his lip at the question. He hadnât thought about it, and now he was thinking of all the possibilities of how he could fuck you right now. He placed his hands on your legs, lifting them so they could wrap around his waist.
âJust stay like this,â he leans down so he's a bit closer to your face, but not close enough for you to kiss him. His lips were slightly parted and his breathing was heavy, and you wanted to kiss him so badly. He almost seems nervous. Which would be insane with the way he made you cum just a few minutes ago. You grab him by the back of his neck to pull him to your lips, and you can feel the way he softens in your hold.
Your other hand snakes its way between the two of you, grabbing onto his cock softly. He tenses up again, a choked moan comes out before he can process the noises coming out of him. You stroke him slowly while he struggles to kiss you back, and you bite his lip as you pull away.Â
âNeed you now, toniâ you whisper on his lips, and you look into his eyes before heâs sitting up once again. He groans while he pumps himself a few more times, and then heâs pressing his tip into you.Â
The both of you let out a moan while heâs pushing himself into you, and you bring both arms up to wrap around his forearms. It takes a minute before he's fully sheathed into you, and when he is you feel so full.Â
âlet me know if it's too much, okay?â His hands grip your waist, and all you nod in response.
âDont worry. I can take it.â you say confidently and he gives you a sly look before he pulls out almost completely, and then thrusts back in with a slow but deep thrust. He hisses, your pussy clenching around him so tightly. One of his hands moves from your waist up your chest, stopping at your breasts to play with one of your nipples while he finds his rhythm inside of you. The stimulation in both areas makes you cry out, your grip on antons arm getting impossibly tighter. Â
He was still processing the fact that you were under him. It was an unreal situation. Never did he think heâd be able to get the girl heâs always wanted. never did he think he would be in her room. Never did he think he would be having sex with her.Â
His pace picks up, your body jerking forward with each thrust. You could barely keep your eyes open, but the view in front of you was too good to miss. The way the muscles in his arms flexed when he drove his hips into yours, and you could see how his stomach contracted with each thrust. His eyes were focused on where the two of you connected while you stared at him, and your moans got increasingly louder with every touch and with every thrust.Â
You bring a hand down to your clit, drawing circles on the sensitive area while he fucked you. He was moaning louder now, soft whimpers leaving him every time you clenched around him.Â
âYouâre so tight, babyâ heâs leaning over you now, moving your hand from your clit and pinning it to your side. He swiftly takes his other hand and places his own fingers on your clit, and you nearly scream, the amount of pressure and speed he adds has your eyes rolling back.
He couldnât get enough of you. If he put his hands somewhere, it would only be for a few seconds before he was moving them to a different part of your body. The hand he used to pin you down was now grabbing onto your thigh, hiking your leg up so he could put it over his shoulder.Â
The new angle had his cock hitting a spot deep inside you that you didnât know existed, and you bite your lip to stop another scream from coming out. His other hand was still in between your bodies, rubbing your clit with a swiftness. Your hand goes to his chest, subconsciously pushing him from the stimulation.Â
âthought you could take it, baby. need me to slow down?â He teases, and his thrusts falter just enough for you to feel it and beg for more. Fingers still on your clit, pushing hard on the bud but not moving them. You could barely think of words to say, but the loss of stimulation was helping you gain consciousness.
ân-no! feelsso good⌠gna cumâ tears swelling up in your eyes, you slur your words trying to tell him that he could keep going. you were so close, and you didn't want his teasing to rip the feeling of your orgasm bubbling going away, so you hoped he would continue the pace and send you over the edge soon.
pushing you into the mattress, he thrusts hard and the tears that glossed over your eyes were now falling down, the pleasure was so overwhelming. with the way he was pressing into you, the way he looked into your eyes with each thrust and you struggled to keep them open, the way his fingers expertly handled your clit while his lips hovered over yours, and the sweet words on how good you felt while you could only whine and babble incoherent words, you were so close to hitting your peak.Â
âcum for me baby, i got youâ and with that your body almost caves in on itself, your orgasm hitting you like a truck. your legs were shaking and your back would have arched completely off the bed if it weren't for anton above you, still fucking you sensless to help you ride it out. a choked sob leaves your lips, too breathless to let out any moans. it quickly became overstimulating, pushing at whatever body parts your hands could reach. He wasnât letting up though, chasing his own high now and was lost in the feeling of your pussy squeezing him deliciously.
âtoni, sâtoo much! too much,â you whine, and the boy removes his fingers off your clit to lift himself up. he brings your leg down from his shoulder, and keeps it around his waist with your other leg. heâs still fucking you, and its still a lot but without the abuse to your clit you could tolerate the feeling of his cock fucking into you some more until he cums. His eyes were shut now leaning back down to bury his face into your neck. your hands wrap around him, running your fingers through his hair and leaving gentle tugs which elicit loud moans out of him
âtell me where to cum, baby. where do you want it?â his voice is rushed, and you know youâd have to think fast because he was a ticking time bomb.Â
âwherever you want toni,â your hands leave his hair so you could move him from your neck and cup his face, giving him a loving look before pulling him into a heated kiss, teeth clashing and lip biting. you slip your tongue into his mouth, swirling around with his while you two moan into each other. with a few sharp thrusts, heâs cumming inside of you. his hips still for a moment, your pussy milking his cock of every last drop of cum. he lets out a weak whimper, body feeling weak as he fucks his cum into you.
you moan, body feeling warm from his body heat along with the fullness of his cock and his cum inside of you. the both of you let out small groans when heâs pulling out, his body still on top of yours. he gives you a soft kiss to your forehead, and you give him a weak smile.Â
âdid so well for me baby. was it okay?â his soft persona was back in full effect now, sitting up so he could help you get cleaned up.
âmore than okay, antonâÂ
he gives you a quick kiss before heâs hopping off the bed and finding his clothes on the floor. he puts his boxers on and his pants, then leaves your room quietly to go to the kitchen. When he turns the corner, heâs met with sky. she has headphones in so she doesn't notice him at first, but once she feels his presence she nearly jumps. then her startled face turns into disgust.Â
âyou two are fucking nasty. when i told you to fix things between you two, i didn't mean come here and break the sound barrier.â she rolls her eyes, going back to fixing herself a snack.
âsorry,â an awkward chuckle leaves anton, and he quickly grabs a water out of the refrigerator and leaves the kitchen, slightly embarrassed by the confrontation. he makes his way back down the hall to go to your bathroom, and he rinses his face with cold water, still warm from your little activity just a few minutes ago. he runs one of your washcloths under warm water, and then heâs back in your room to clean you up. sitting down in front of you, he wipes you up in the places you were most sweaty, and then wiping your thighs and carefully wiping up the cum that was dripping out of you. you were still sensitive, wincing at the contact. he helps you sit up, and you run a hand through his hair. you reach over the edge of the bed to grab your hoodie off the floor, slipping it back on. suddenly feeling a little too bare in front of anton since he at least had on a pair of pants.Â
You admire the boy in front of you. He was the same, but different to you now. a sweet, beautiful boy, who was now all yours. a sweet boy who just fucked you to oblivion. a beautiful boy, who could put up with your attitude. who was weak for you, who would do anything for you. it makes you smile, the most perfect boy liked you and only you. and he was there your whole life, you two just had to figure it out on your own.  Â
âi ran into sky in the kitchen,â his voice was low as he handed you the water he brought, and your eyes widened in shock that your friend was home. you didnât think she would be home by this time, usually staying out until nighttime at the library before she came home.Â
âoh god, i didn't know she would be home this early. weâre never going to hear the end of this.â you whine, head in your hands. anton laughs, finding your reaction adorable. as embarrassing as it was to have someone hear you from the outside of your bedroom, he didn't have that much shame. the fact that you were loud enough to disturb the peace in the other room filled him with pride.Â
âsheâll be okay. this won't be the last time she hears anything come out of this room anywaysâ he gives you a cheeky grin, and you scoff before slapping his shoulder. who would have thought he would be so dirty?
âdon't say that!! weâre gonna have to keep quiet if sheâs home,âÂ
âweâll see about that. you talk a big game but you crumbled the second i put it inâ heâs still grinning at you, saying it with such pride and you slap his arm again, face heating up at his words. now you have two things that youâll never be able to live down.
âyouâre sick, lee antonâ you whine, and he just laughs before pulling you into a bear hug and laying the two of you onto the pillows. you two get comfortable fast, your back resting against his chest while his arms rest over your body after he pulls the covers over you two
âyou like it thoughâ he nuzzles into your neck, spooning you and rubbing soft circles on your stomach under your hoodie.
âmaybe just a littleâ
while spending the rest of the night cuddling, you think that both of your moms were right about setting you two up. youâre suddenly grateful about that surprise âblindâ date, and that your mom was right about giving him a chance. laying with him just felt right. and you hope that you can lay with him forever.
A/N: let me know what you guys think !! i kind of half assed the editing, so i apologize if there's any errors + i know the capitalization is a little wacky throughout the fic. i hope you guys enjoyed this fic as much as i enjoyed writing it :)

Plane Rides with Lando were always amusing and fun but most especially difficult. It's not that you don't love Lando you really it's just that he is very clingy as in VERY clingy to you on Plane Rides.
Lando knew to himself that he was a clingy person. He would always say "you can't blame me, you're just so perfect I always want to be next to you." He can never get enough of your touch, his love language is physical touch that's why your touch is basically his life support.
That's why when you and Lando took a plane ride back home boy, were things crazy.
"I really like this jet you bought baby, it's so cozy." You say softly, while you and Lando enter the private jet. Your hands touching and feeling the texture of the seats while Lando had his hand wrapped around your waist as he peppers kisses on your neck.
"Where should we sit baby?" You smile as you look at him.
"Anywhere you want." He utters, his hand still tightly close on your waist.
"Oooh here, I like the softness of the seat here. Even if they're almost the same." You giggle, sitting on the seat which is a few seats across the bar. With your immediate sitting, Lando's hand was swiftly taken away from your waist.
"Um excuse me? Why are you sitting there?" Lando raises his eyebrows, seeing you sit on the chair which is closely across his seat which he eventually sat on.
"Should I be sitting somewhere else? Is there a problem?" You furrow your eyebrows, looking for an answer from your boyfriend seeing as you were so comfortable already.
"Yeah, you're not next to me." He crosses his arms, fluttering those eyelashes of his at you with the most convincing and cute face he could ever give.
"Baby." You say, glaring at him playfully wondering how on earth you can be next to him when you're just across him. "We're not gonna fit in one seat."
"Yea we will, there's my lap for a reason." He argues back well in a playful demeanor, patting his lap as he looks at you while smirking.
A laugh comes out of your mouth, seeing how clingy your boyfriend is. You stood up from your seat and settled in on your boyfriend's lap, wrapping your hands around the back of his neck which you knew he loved so much.
For almost 30 minutes, you snuggled with Lando. Eventually, Lando fell asleep with his head on the crook of your neck. Snoring softly, you couldn't help but take a picture of your boyfriend's cuteness.
Moments later, you feel your stomach gurgling. Shit. You ate too much earlier during the buffet. You groan loudly, feeling the ache. Noticing that Lando was sound asleep. You gently and softly try to get out of his lap.
With your feet now on the floor, you sigh softly. You stand up, not realizing that Lando's hand was still on your stomach wrapped around.
Lando groans feeling you go away, he immediately pushes you back down to his lap. "Where are you going?" He mumbles, kissing your neck.
A small laugh comes out of you, knowing that you weren't able to escape. "Baby, I need to go to the bathroom." You whine softly, feeling the ache on your stomach get worse.
"why?" He mumbles, shifting his kisses from your neck to your cheeks.
"cause I need to poop and pee." You exclaim, still hurdled on his lap.
"Why?"
"Cause I ate too much and drank water." You argue, knowing the game he was playing.
"why?" Lando says in a playful voice.
"Because I was hungry and I was thirsty!!" You protest, whining at your boyfriend.
"why?" He continues teasing you and pushing your buttons.
"Lando Norris! I need to take a shit!" You hurriedly take your boyfriend's hand off you as you rush to the bathroom.
Lando giggles at your playful argument, he hurriedly follows you to the bathroom. Despite him pushing your buttons, he still was clingy to you. Whether you're pooping or peeing, he'll always want your touch. He'll gladly hold your hand just to feel you while you poop.
After your long comforting and weird poop. You got out of the bathroom with Lando holding your hands that were washed of course. You couldn't help but smug and laugh at your boyfriend.
"your poo doesn't smell, it's nice." He laughs giving you a kiss on the cheek.
"God, you're so weird." You chuckle as you and Lando head back to your seat. Eventually snuggling back together.

When the app tries to make you robo-scab
When we talk about the abusive nature of gig work, thereâs some obvious targets, like algorithmic wage discrimination, where two workers are paid different rates for the same job, in order to trick occasional gig-workers to give up their other sources of income and become entirely dependent on the app:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men
Then thereâs the opacityâââimagine if your boss refused to tell you how much youâll get paid for a job until after youâve completed it, claimed that this was done in order to âprotect privacyââââand then threatened anyone who helped you figure out the true wage on offer:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/07/hr-4193/#boss-app
Opacity is wage theftâs handmaiden: every gig worker producing content for a social media algorithm is subject to having their reachâââand hence their payâââcut based on the unaccountable, inscrutable decisions of a content moderation system:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/10/e2e/#the-censors-pen
Making content for an algorithm is like having a boss that docks every paycheck because you broke rules that you are not allowed to know, because if you knew the rules, youâd figure out how to cheat without your boss catching you. Content moderation is the last place where security through obscurity is considered good practice:
https://doctorow.medium.com/como-is-infosec-307f87004563
When workers seize the means of computation, amazing things happen. In Indonesia, gig workers create and trade tuyul apps that let them unilaterally modify the way that their bossesâ systems see themâââeverything from GPS spoofing to accessibility mods:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/08/tuyul-apps/#gojek
So the tech and labor story isnât wholly grim: there are lots of ways that tech can enhance labor struggles, letting workers collaborate and coordinate. Without digital systems, we wouldnât have the Hot Strike Summer:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/02/not-what-it-does/#who-it-does-it-to
As the historic writer/actor strike shows us, the resurgent labor movement and the senescent forces of crapulent capitalism are locked in a death-struggle over not just what digital tools do, but who they do it for and who they do it to:
https://locusmag.com/2022/01/cory-doctorow-science-fiction-is-a-luddite-literature/
When it comes to the epic fight over who technology acts for and against, we need a diversity of tactics, backstopped by tech operated by and for its usersâââand by laws that protect workers and the public. That dynamic is in sharp focus in UNITE Here Local 11âs strike against Orange Countyâs Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa.
The UNITE Here strike turns on the usual issues like a living wage (hotel staff are paid so little they have to rent rooming-house beds by the shift, paying for the right to sleep in a room for a few hours at a time, without any permanent accommodation). Theyâre also seeking health-care and pensions, so they can be healthy at work and retire after long service. Finally, theyâre seeking their employerâs support for LAâs Responsible Hotels Ordinance, which would levy a tax on hotel rooms to help pay for hotel workersâ housing costs (a hotel worker who canât afford a bed is the equivalent of a fast food worker who has to apply for food stamps):
https://www.unitehere11.org/responsible-hotels-ordinance/
But the Marriottâââwhich is owned by the University of California and managed by Aimbridge Hospitalityâââhas refused to bargain, walking out negotiations.
But the employer didnât walk out over wages, benefits or support for a housing subsidy. They walked out when workers demanded that the scabs that the company was trying to hire to break the strike be given full time, union jobs.
These arenât just any scabs, either. Theyâre predominantly Black workers who rely on the $700m Instawork app for gigs. These workers are being dispatched to cross the picket line without any warning that theyâre being contracted as strikebreakers. When workers refuse the cross the picket and join the strike, Instawork cancels all their shifts and permanently blocks them from new jobs.
This is a new, technologically supercharged form of illegal strikebreaking. Itâs one thing for a single boss to punish a worker who refuses to scab, but Instawork acts as a plausible-deniability filter for all the major employers in the region. Like the landlord apps that allow landlords to illegally fix rents by coordinating hikes, Instawork lets bosses illegally collude to rig wages by coordinating a blocklist of workers who refuse to scab:
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/10/company-that-makes-rent-setting-software-for-landlords-sued-for-collusion/?comments=1
The racial dimension is really important here: the Marriott has a longstanding de facto policy of refusing to hire Black workers, and whenever they are confronted with this, they insist that there are no qualified Black workers in the labor pool. But as soon as the predominantly Latino workforce struck, Marriott discovered a vast Black workforce that it could coerce into scabbing, in collusion with Instawork.
Now, all of this isnât just sleazy, itâs illegal, a violation of Section 7 of the NLRB Act. Historically, that wouldnât have mattered, because a string of presidents, R and D, have appointed useless do-nothing ghouls to run the NLRB. But the Biden admin, pushed by the partyâs left wing, made a string of historic, excellent appointments, including NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo, who has set her sights on punishing gig work companies for flouting labor law:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/10/see-you-in-the-funny-papers/#bidens-legacy
UNITE HERE 11 has brought a case to the NLRB, charging the Instawork, the UC system, Marriott, and Aimbridge with violating labor law by blackmailing gig workers into crossing the picket line. The union is also asking the NLRB to punish the companies for failing to protect workers from violent retaliation from the wealthy hotel guests who have punched them and screamed epithets at them. The hotel has refused to identify these thug guests so that the workers they assaulted can swear out complaints against them.
Writing about the strike for Jacobin, Alex N Press tells the story of Thomas Bradley, a Black worker who was struck off all Instawork shifts for refusing to cross the picket line and joining it instead:
https://jacobin.com/2023/07/southern-california-hotel-workers-strike-automated-management-unite-here
Bradleyâs case is exhibit A in the UNITE HERE 11 case before the NLRB. He has a degree in culinary arts, but racial discrimination in the industry has kept him stuck in gig and temp jobs ever since he graduated, nearly a quarter century ago. Bradley lived out of his car, but that was repossessed while he slept in a hotel room that UNITE HERE 11 fundraised for him, leaving him homeless and bereft of all his worldly possessions.
With UNITE HERE 11âs help, Bradleyâs secured a job at the downtown LA Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, a hotel that has bargained with the workers. Bradley is using his newfound secure position to campaign among other Instawork workers to convince them not to cross picket lines. In these group chats, Jacobin saw workers worrying âthat joining the strike would jeopardize their standing on the app.â
Today (July 30) at 1530h, Iâm appearing on a panel at Midsummer Scream in Long Beach, CA, to discuss the wonderful, award-winning âGhost Postâ Haunted Mansion project I worked on for Disney Imagineering.

⤠you need to be yourself (love someone for loving you instead of someone really cool)
â back to main masterlist
read it on ao3
SUMMARY âł Tim Drake and you, throughout the years. Growing up changes things, after all. You've always valued your independence, your ability to navigate life on your own terms. Yet, beneath that independence lies a yearningâfor connection, for understanding. Thereâs a realization settling inâa realization that friendships, like all relationships, evolve and change as you get older. You've grown alongside Tim, but perhaps you've also outgrown some aspects of your dynamic. Youâve noticed the way his muscles flex when he stretches, the way his arms have gotten bigger and youâve seen a glimpse of his toned stomach. Heâs grown up, as seen by his body. But growing up doesnât just change your body. It also changes your mind. pairing: tim drake x fem!reader warnings: reader gets grazed with a bullet, but i think thats it (other than the angst, that is) tags/notes: unrequited love but not actually unrequited love, hurt/comfort, angst w/ a happy ending, friends to lovers, this fic was inspired by Best Friend by Rex Orange County. wc: 6.9k
You first met Tim Drake at a gala.
Your parents had promised you ice cream if you behaved well. You didnât want to go in the first place, but the promise of a sweet treat was too tempting for your little eight-year-old mind.
Dressed in your best clothes, you arrived at the grand event, feeling overwhelmed by the opulence and the throngs of well-dressed adults. You stuck close to your parents, clutching your motherâs hand tightly as you navigated the sea of guests.
While your parents mingled with other attendees, you found yourself near the dessert table, eyes wide with anticipation. Your father said not to try anything without permission, but he didnât say from who. Now, you have to figure out who to ask and how to ask them. Words never came easily to you.
Thereâs a boy coming up to you. Maybe you can ask him. Maybe not, he looks like heâs your age. An adult would know better.
âHi, Iâm Tim,â he said, offering you a smile that seemed a little too mature for his age.
You introduced yourself shyly, still focused on the food. Tim seemed to sense your discomfort in the unfamiliar environment.
âDo you want to go somewhere less boring?â he asked, glancing around to ensure no adults were watching.
Nodding eagerly, you followed Tim through the maze of guests until you reached a quiet corner of the gala hall. There, hidden from the prying eyes of the adults, Tim produced a small bag of chocolates from his pockets.
âAll the chocolates have weird stuff in them. These just have chocolate,â he explains, handing one to you.
You nibble on it gratefully, taking a seat with him on a nearby bench. The two of you chatted about school, favorite toys, and the best flavors of ice cream. Kid stuff, you know how it is. Tim tells you about his parents' business, about why their work is important and that theyâd appreciate your parentsâ support.
âYou should tell your mom and dad about my mom and dads work,â he insists. To be honest, you werenât paying all that much attention to what he had been saying, but youâll tell your parents about it since he asked.
Your mom shakes her head when you tell her, muttering under her breath, âTheyâre making their son network?â You didn't quite understand what your mother meant at the time. You only remember wanting to share ice cream with him.
From that day on, your paths crossed frequently at various events. Tim quickly became one of your closest friends, someone who understood your quiet nature and often helped you navigate social situations. You find out youâll attend the same school, which makes you happy.
Youâve never been one for friendships. You simply just prefer being alone, often labeled as âmysteriousâ by your peers. But Tim has dutifully kept the title of your best friend for years now.
The thing is, youâre not sure you're his best friend.
Tim Drake has his friends, and all you have is him. Thereâs the pretty blonde, named Stephanie, the other pretty blonde, Cassie. The lively one named Bart, and the cool one named Conner. Sometimes Tim invites you to hang out with them, but youâre not stupid. You know thereâs a disconnect between you and them. You feel like you're constantly missing something when youâre around them.
You stop hanging out with them, and eventually Tim stops asking. He mustâve noticed, though, since he starts coming over to your place every Friday for movie night.
At first, itâs a bit awkward. Tim brings over some of your favorite movies, trying to rekindle that old spark of friendship. You sit side by side on the couch, munching on popcorn and watching the screen, occasionally sharing a laugh or a comment.
As the weeks go by, you start to relax into this new routine. Tim is patient, never pushing you to talk more than youâre comfortable with. Sometimes, in the quiet moments between movies, he asks about your day, your thoughts, your dreams.
One Friday evening, after a particularly intense movie, Tim turns to you with a serious expression.
"I miss hanging out with you, you know," he admits quietly. "I know things have changed between us, but I still value our friendship a lot." He scratches the back of his neck. âI know Iâve been busy lately, but a lot of things have happened. Out of my control.â
You glance at him, feeling a mix of emotions. Part of you wants to explain why you pulled away, but another part just wants to enjoy this moment of peace with Tim. You nod slightly, not quite sure what to say.
Tim smiles softly, reaching over to squeeze your shoulder gently. "Thanks for letting me come over every week. It means a lot to me."
And just like that, the tension eases between you. You realize that maybe friendship doesnât always have to fit into a predefined mold. Tim understands you in a way that no one else does, and youâre grateful for his presence in your life.
You try-out for the volleyball team. You make it.
It becomes a staple in your life. Your afternoons are filled with shoes squeaking on the gym floors and sore muscles. The practices, the games, the friendship with your teammatesâit all starts to feel like a natural extension of who you are.
The friendship with your teammates.
They form a group chat, adding you in it of course. It stops being used only for practice announcements and starts being used as âlifeâ updates from your teammates. They gossip about who they like, who they dislike, their boy troubles. You donât say much, but when they ask you for your opinion, you give it. Apparently, you give really good advice.
Youâre sixteen when you realize youâre in love with Tim Drake.
Youâre not sure how long exactly, but you know that youâve craved his presence since youâve met him.
Tim introduces you to his boyfriend, Bernard. Heâs blond. You think Tim might have a thing for blondes.
You tell Tim this later, when Bernard leaves. He only shrugs.
You wonder why you didnât realize when Tim dated Stephanie. Probably because they dated when you and Tim were estranged. Maybe the reason you two became so was because they dated. You donât know.
You've always known Tim as your best friend, the person who understands you better than anyone else. But realizing you're in love with him changes everything. It's a mix of emotionsâjoy, fear, uncertainty. You start noticing things about Tim that you hadn't beforeâthe way he smiles, the way he talks about his interests with such passion, the way he looks at you sometimes when he thinks you're not paying attention.
That last thing might be delusion on your part.
But Tim has Bernard now, and you respect that. You value your friendship with Tim too much to jeopardize it with your feelings. So, you bury your emotions deep down and try to focus on being the best friend you can be.
âWhat about you, [Name]?â asks Mina, libero of your team. Mina is notorious among your friends as the one with the most boy problems. Youâd never say this out loud, but you think she doesnât know that you donât always need to be in a relationship.
âAny boy troubles?â
Your shoelaces canât get tied fast enough. âNo.â Because thereâs not. Tim has his own boyfriend. Thereâs no you and him, apart from being you being his friend and him being your best friend.
Lilly, setter, gives you a playful nudge, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Come on, spill! There's gotta be someone you're crushing on."
You chuckle nervously, shaking your head. "Really, there's no one."
Your teammates exchange knowing glances, clearly not convinced. You've always been more reserved about your personal life compared to them. They respect your privacy, but sometimes they can't help but tease. Youâve come to realize that itâs just a friend thing.
Senior year is a calm year.
Most people describe it as the most stressful yet chill year of them all. Stressful, because after this life is going to be serious and suddenly youâre swamped with creating a resume and applying to colleges. Chill, because you can simply just not do all that, and barely show up at all.
Your parents want you to go to college, but assure you that if you donât want to, youâll always have a place at their company. Nepotism is a beautiful thing.
You think less of Tim and think more of making this volleyball season the best it can be. Itâs your senior year after all, when better to go all out? You become the reason your team wins their games. The star ace.Â
During the final game of the season, Tim meets you out back, just before you have to go out on the court. He's holding a bouquet of flowersâviolets and peonies. His smile is nervous, uncertain, but there's a warmth in his eyes that you've come to recognize as affection.
"Hey," he starts, handing you the bouquet. "I know this might be a weird time, but there's something I've been wanting to tell you."
Your heart skips a beat as you take the flowers, your mind racing with possibilities. Could this be...?
"I've been thinking a lot lately," Tim continues, his words coming out in a rush now. "About us, about our friendship. I realize I've been a bit... oblivious, maybe. And I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you, [Name]. More than anyone else in my life."
You feel a mix of emotionsâhope, confusion, and a twinge of disappointment. You try to keep your expression neutral, not wanting to betray your feelings. Youâre not sure what you were thinking. You shouldâve known better.
You tentatively reach out to take the bouquet. Itâs pretty. âYou shouldâve probably saved them for after the game.â Itâs meant to be a joke, but youâve never been too good at making those.
Tim chuckles softly, his nervousness easing a bit at your attempt at humor. "Maybe. I wanted to give them to you now.â
The bouquet feels heavy in your hands, the flowers vibrant and fragrant against your fingers. âThank you.â
You play with all your might. Sweat beads at your temple as you leap in the air. It feels like flying. You play with a fierce determination, channeling your emotions into each move, each serve, and each spike.
You spot Tim in the crowd as youâre in the air. He's watching you intently, his eyes filled with pride and admiration. The game seems to blur around you as you lock eyes with him. You almost miss the winning point.
You're surrounded by your teammates, celebrating the victory, but your eyes search for Tim. He's waiting for you at the edge of the court, a proud smile on his face.
As you approach him, still breathless from the game, he envelops you in a hug. "You were amazing out there," he says sincerely, his voice filled with admiration.
"Thanks," you manage to reply, feeling a rush of emotionsâpride, happiness, and a lingering uncertainty.
âI like seeing you do things you love.â He should stop saying things like that.
Tim wants to take you out to dinner to celebrate. You initially decline, and he looks a little confused by that.
âMy coach said sheâd take us out to eat if we won,â you explain.
âOh,â he says.
âDonât worry about what Coach said, [Name],â says Anne, captain, laying a firm hand on your shoulder. âGo spend time with your boyfriend. Iâll ask her to reschedule.â
âTimâs not myââ
âThatâs okay,â smiles Tim. Itâs his showman smile. âI donât want to keep [Name] from spending time with you.â He doesnât deny that heâs your boyfriend. Why doesnât he deny that heâs your boyfriend?
Anne grins, fierce and sharp. âTake her out to dinner.â And thatâs that.
Tim keeps a friendly hand on your back as he guides you out. âLet's go to that place we talked about last week," he suggests, his voice almost as sweet as the victory that's just come to pass. "I promise it'll be worth it."
You're filled with a mix of emotions as you walk alongside Tim, still processing everything that's happened. The restaurant is cozy, with dim lighting and soft music playing in the background. Tim seems relaxed, chatting about the game, your performance, anything really. Timâs always had a way of capturing your attention.
âBernard and I broke up.â You almost donât register the info, too focused on watching his face.
You furrow your brows. âWhat did you do?â
âWhy do you assume I did something?â he asks dryly.
âHave you met you?â
âNothing happened.â He rolls his eyes. âIt just didnât work out.â
âOh,â you reply softly, unsure how to respond to Timâs revelation. You hadnât expected he would talk about his relationship status, and wouldâve preferred if he hadnât. Tim continues to look at you, waiting for you to say something, anything, but youâre not sure what to say.Â
The atmosphere between you feels a bit heavier now, the weight of unspoken feelings lingering in the air. You've always valued your friendship with Tim above anything else, and while part of you feels a pang of sympathy for his breakup, another part wonders what it means for your relationship with him.
By the time dinner ends and you're walking back together, the tension that had briefly surfaced seems to have dissipated. Tim is back to his usual self, cracking jokes and teasing you playfully about your volleyball skills. You find yourself smiling, grateful for the comfort and familiarity of your friendship.
As you part ways for the night, Tim gives you a warm hug, holding onto you for just a moment longer than usual. "Thanks for tonight," he says sincerely, his voice quiet.
"Anytime," you reply softly, feeling a rush of warmth at his words. "I'm glad we could hang out."
Tim nods, his gaze lingering on you for a moment longer before he finally heads off. You watch him go, your mind swirling with thoughts and emotions that you're not quite ready to unpack yet.
In the days that follow, you notice subtle changes in your interactions with Tim. He is pulling you closer to him. He has taken you to more private places just to hang out. He seems more attentive, more considerate of your feelings and preferences. He makes an effort to spend more time with you, whether it's grabbing lunch together between classes or inviting you over for movie nights more frequently.Â
You feel a flutter of hope in your chest with each of these gestures, but you push it down. You know better.
Tim stops going to school for a while, and it feels like you're back to square one. Back to when he found better ways to spend his time, with others who are not you.
You meet a boy. Heâs nice and heâs cute. You like him well enough, and he seems to genuinely enjoy your company. Your friends say that you guys are cute together.
He asks you on a date to a local cafe, and you agree. It's a pleasant afternoon, filled with easy conversation and laughter. He listens intently as you talk about your interests, your dreams for the future, and he shares his own aspirations with you. It feels comfortable, uncomplicated.
Comfortable and uncomplicated never last long for you.
âThis is a goddamn robbery!â
Two warning shots go off, and people scramble out of their seats to cover. What kind of asshole robs a cafe? You hide under the table, mind scrambled by the sudden change of events. Your hands scramble to grab on to your date, for comfort or for reassurance you donât know, but you donât feel anything.
You see your date round the booth and run out of the door. He left you.
Youâre left alone and bewildered, shaken by the sudden chaos. Your heart races, adrenaline pumping as you try to make sense of what just happened. Fucking asshole , he just left you!
âPut the gun down, sir.â
Thereâs someone in the doorway. You peek out from under the table, heart still racing, and see himâRed Robin. Heâs a figure of black and red. His presence commands and reassures.
The robber hesitates, gun wavering slightly as he eyes Red Robin warily. Itâs a stand-off, tense and uncertain.
âI said put the gun down,â Red Robin repeats calmly, stepping forward with measured confidence.
The robber takes slow steps to the side, gun pointed at the vigilante. Every step taken to get closer has the robber threatening to shoot. âEasy, just put it down and we can talk,â Red Robin continues, his voice steady and calm. The tension in the cafe is strong, everyone holding their breath as they watch the standoff unfold.
The robberâs hand shakes as he weighs his options, eyes darting between Red Robin and the patrons cowering behind tables. His legs carry him closer and closer. Heâs.
Heâs getting closer to you.
You try to move further under the table, but the robber lunges down and grabs your arm, twisting his and pulling you up. You yelp as thereâs suddenly something cold pressed to your head.
âIâll blast her brains out.â
"Let her go.â Red Robin's voice is suddenly deep and menacing.
The robber hesitates, glancing between you and Red Robin. He tightens his grip on your arm, causing you to wince in pain.
"Let her go now," Red Robin repeats, his tone firm and unwavering. Your breathing starts to pick up.
Suddenly, there's a blur of motion and a loud thud. The robber cries out in pain as he releases you, stumbling back from the force of impact. Thereâs a loud sound and suddenly thereâs a searing pain in your side.
You whimper and stumble to the floor, holding your side. Thereâs a rush of movement around you as you crawl away. You hear sirens. The police are here. What good they were.
âHey. Heyheyheyheyhey. Itâs okay.â A hand removes yours and replaces it. You look at them. Theyâre covered in blood. âItâs just a graze. Itâs okay.â
Red Robin is at your side muttering reassurances into your ear. You whimper when his hand applies pressure to your wound. He shushes you quietly. âYouâre fine.â
Then his voice breaks. âYou have to be.â
Thereâs a heavy thud of boots in your directions. âRed Robin.â Itâs Batman, in all this terrifying and dramatic glory. Batman, with a quick glance at you, shifts his attention to the situation at hand. âShe needs medical attention.â
Red Robin helps you sit up a little, keeping pressure on your wound while Batman assesses the situation. The cafe is now surrounded by police, and the robber is being apprehended. "Stay with me," Red Robin urges softly, his voice a comforting presence amidst the chaos. "You're going to be okay."
Paramedics arrive shortly after, quickly attending to your wound. Red Robin stays by your side, explaining what happened to the paramedics and keeping you calm. Itâs strange, how easily youâre comforted by his presence.
You're taken to the hospital for treatment, where the doctors confirm that your injury is indeed just a graze. Your parents are the first to arrive, appearances rustled. Your mother sheds a tear, even after you tell her that itâs just a graze, that it couldâve been a lot worse. That makes her cry harder.
Your friends arrive next, rushing through the door. You ask how they found out what happened, and they say they were secretly watching your date from across the street. They ridicule your date, having saw how he ran away first thing. You canât bring yourself to be irked with them.
No one else comes to visit.
Youâre allowed to go back to school after a week. Tim is there, waiting by the entrance. He perks up when he sees you. You stop in your tracks as he makes his way over to you.
Tim embraces you in a hug, unexpectedly. You canât bring your arms up to hug him back. He must notice, because he unwraps from you with a cough.
"...Hey," Tim says softly, his eyes searching yours. "I heard what happened. Are you okay?"
You nod, not being able to bring yourself to say anything. He nods as well. âThatâs good.â
â...Are you sure?â
âTimâŚâ you sigh, finally. He perks up at your voice, looking at you earnestly.
âDo you want to go somewhere? The park? We donât have to do anything, we can just. Sit. I donât want you to pull your stitches or anythingââ
âYou werenât even there.â
Tim shuts up, staring at you. You donât look at him, perhaps afraid. Youâve never truly spoken your mind, preferring to simply deal with it and move on. But you⌠deserve better.
âI waited for you to come visit,â you whisper, looking down at your shoe. âBut you never came. Did you even know?â
His hands hover in the air uselessly. âI. Of course I knewââ
âThen why didnât you visit?â Your brows furrow. âIs that asking too much? For you to just, show up? While Iâm sitting in the hospital because I barely missed being shot?â
âI was busy!â
âYouâre always busy,â you groan.
Tim's expression tightens with guilt as he listens to your words, his usual composed demeanor faltering. He runs a hand through his hair, looking conflicted. "I know... I know it's not an excuse, but things have been crazy, and I... I should have been there for you. I'm really sorry."
âItâs the same thing everytime.â
â[Name]?â
âYouâre not there. You apologize for not being there. I accept, we move on. And then it happens again.â
Tim's shoulders slump slightly, and he takes a moment before responding, his voice quieter now, tinged with regret. "I... I don't want it to be like that. I want to be there for you. I want to... I want to do better. You just⌠you donât know what I have going on in my life.â
You glance up at him, meeting his gaze. His sincerity is evident, but so is his struggle with balancing his responsibilities. You take a deep breath, feeling a mix of frustration and a longing for understanding.
âI donât know because you donât tell me anything,â you mutter.
He takes a step closer, hesitant but determined to bridge the gap that has formed between you. âIâm sorry, but please. You're⌠youâre my best friend.â
You shake your head. âYouâre my best friend. Iâm just⌠convenient for you.â
Tim's expression softens, hurt flickering across his features before he shakes his head. âNo. No, please donât think that.â
âWhat else am I supposed to think?â
Tim's eyes search yours, pleading for understanding. He takes a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "I... I know I've let you down. And I'm sorry for that. You mean more to me than just convenience. I don't always⌠know how to balance everything.â
His admission hangs in the air, vulnerable and raw. You feel a pang of sympathy mixed with frustration. Tim has always been your closest friend, but for a long time, it's felt like he's slipping away, caught up in his own world.
âCan you just,â you pause, feeling like your entire world just shifted on its axis. âLeave me alone?â
â...How long?â he croaks.
You hesitate, the weight of your words heavy on your chest. "I don't know, Tim. I just. I need some space right now."
He nods slowly, expression twisted with anguish. âOkay,â he says softly. âWhatever you want.â
You wanted him, but thatâs not possible.
Tim stands there for a moment, as if searching for something else to say, but ultimately turns away. You watch him go, feeling a mixture of relief and sorrow.
Days pass, and Tim respects your request for space. The halls of school feel different without his constant presence, a reminder of the void left by his absence. You start spending time on rooftops at night. You find solace in the quiet, away from the complexities of school and relationships. The city lights spread out beneath you, casting a gentle glow on the world below.
It changed the way you see Tim. Heâs matured into a strong and confident person, and you canât help but notice the way he holds himself now. Heâs more than just your childhood friendâheâs become someone you admire for his determination and resilience. Yet, amidst this newfound admiration, thereâs still a part of you that remembers the boy who used to share chocolates with you at galas, who understood your quiet nature and sat by you during movie nights.
You can try to move on. You can hang out with other people, but heâll always be in the back of your mind. You know you miss him. Every time you see him at school, you feel a pang of longing, mixed with a hint of resentment.
âYou shouldnât be out so late.â
You donât move your head from where itâs rested on your arms on top of the ledge. Footsteps echo closer, until a figure clad in red maneuvers himself to sit on top of the ledge. Red Robin has decided to pay you a visit. You hope he doesnât think youâre up to no good.
Itâs silent for a moment, only the sound of wind rustling and cars moving able to be heard. The vigilante coughs, fidgeting.
â...You didnât tell me why you were out so late.â
âYou didnât ask,â you mutter, finger trailing the surface of the ledge.Â
âI guess I didnât,â he chuckles awkwardly. He shifts, the dim glow from the city below casting a subdued light on his features. His suit blends with the shadows, making him seem almost ethereal against the night sky.
âItâs just that,â he pauses, straightening his shoulders once he seems to find his confidence. âA pretty girl like you shouldnât be out alone so late.â
You raise a brow at him, which makes him falter ever so slightly. âIâm on a rooftop. Thereâs no one else here.â
âIâm here,â he points out.
âYou are,â you agree. âSo now that you have me alone, are you gonna do something to me?â
He sputters, waving his hands. âNo! No, God no. I promise. I help people, notââ he stops, hearing a sound. Itâs your laughter. Itâs nothing grand, but itâs genuine. The vigilante relaxes a gentle smile on his face as he takes you in.
âSorry,â you chuckle, eyes closing. Itâs pretty late. You could honestly fall asleep here. Red Robin lets out a breath he didnât realize he was holding, his shoulders dropping in relief. âBad joke.â
âNo, no. It was good,â he assures. âYou got me good.â
The moment stretches between you, filled with the easy silence of two people who have unknowingly shared many quiet moments together. Red Robinâs presence is both comforting and disconcerting.
A finger gently pokes you, stirring you awake. âSleep at home, not here.â
You blink a few times, slowly lifting your head from your arms, feeling the cool breeze brush against your cheeks. Red Robinâs face is close, concern etched in his features. You yawn, stretching out your limbs and reluctantly pushing yourself up from the ledge.
âAre you not sleeping well?â
âNo more than usual,â He offers a hand to help you stand, and you take it, feeling the strength in his grip. Once on your feet, you dust off your clothes and glance around the rooftop, a part of you reluctant to leave the serene view behind.
âLet me walk you home,â Red Robin offers, his voice gentle but firm.
âSure.â
As you walk together, the city around you hums with a nocturnal life of its own. The streets are quieter, but not entirely deserted. Red Robin stays close, his presence reassuring. You steal glances at him. Something about him feels familiar. Maybe itâs just because heâs friendly.
When you turn back to thank him once youâre at your front door, heâs gone.
It becomes a routine, meeting him on that rooftop. Sometimes he doesnât show, you feel eyes watching you when youâre walking back home. The days blend into nights, and you find yourself looking forward to those moments on the rooftop. The city feels different when you're up high, watching from a vantage point few ever see. It's a perspective that offers clarity, a place where the noise of everyday life fades into the background.
One evening, you arrive on the rooftop to find Red Robin already there, leaning against the ledge, gazing out at the city. He turns when he hears your approach, his expression softening.
âYouâre early tonight,â he comments, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.
âNeeded some fresh air,â you reply, settling beside him. âAnd some company.â
He chuckles softly, the sound blending with the distant hum of the city. âWell, youâve got both now.â
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence, the kind that speaks volumes without needing words. You find yourself studying him, noticing the way his eyes reflect the city lights, the slight tension in his shoulders that eases the longer you sit together.
âWhy do you come here?â he asks suddenly, breaking the silence. His tone is curious.
âI like being alone,â is all you say.
He nods thoughtfully. âI get that. Sometimes itâs easier to think when youâre away from everything else.â He looks at you. âSurely youâre not lonely though, right?â
âLonely?â
âLikeâŚâ he hesitates, âyou have friends?â
âI do,â you hum, furrowing your brows. âBut. I donât know. The girls on my team are nice, but I donât really feel all that connected to them.â
âIs there no one you feel connected to?â
âThere was somebody, but,â you trail off, looking towards the skyline. âPeople change. I guess I just canât keep up.â
Red Robin listens quietly, his gaze thoughtful. "Change can be hard," he agrees softly. "But it's also inevitable. We all grow, evolve... sometimes in different directions."
"Yeah," you murmur, staring out at the city lights. "I guess that's part of growing up."
He whistles slightly. âSo, who was that somebody?â You raise a brow at him. âIf youâre comfortable sharing, that is!â
âDidnât take you for a gossip,â you mumble.
Red Robin laughs softly, the sound light and almost musical against the backdrop of the night. âItâs not gossip if Iâm just listening.â
You consider his words, your gaze drifting back to the cityscape. âIt was my best friend,â you admit quietly. âWe grew up together, shared everything. But lately... things have changed. Weâve changed.â You sigh softly. âSometimes I wonder if I did something wrong, or if itâs just... life.â
âIâm sure you did nothing wrong,â he whispers.
âI was in love with him. I think I still am.â
The admission hangs in the air between you, heavier than any silence that had come before. Red Robin shifts beside you, his posture suddenly more alert, more focused on your words.
"In love?" he repeats softly, as if testing the weight of the phrase.
âI kind of realized it when he introduced me to his then boyfriend. But by the time I understood my feelings, it felt too late. He has friends and big things happening for him, and all I have is him,â you mumble. âBut I guess I donât have him anymore.â
âHe let me down so many times and I donât even have it in me to be angry with him. I just wish he chose me.â You turn to face him.
Red Robin's expression is unreadable beneath his mask, but there's a softness in his eyes that wasn't there before. He listens intently, not interrupting your flow of words, allowing you to spill the feelings that have been bottled up for so long.
Your face turns sad. âBut maybe Iâm being selfish.â
Red Robin's hand moves slightly, as if he's about to reach out to you, but he stops himself, clenching it into a fist instead. "It's hard," he says gently. "Loving someone who doesn't see you the same way, or who can't be there for you like you need them to be."
You stare at him as he continues, âI know it canât compare to what you felt, but Iâve been so upset for the longest because I couldnât share this part of my life with you.â He gestures to himself. âI was angry I couldnât share with you the crazy things that happen on patrol or rely on you to patch me up if things go bad.â
The fog in your head clears. You look at him in confusion. âWhat?â
âBut I was also so scared of bringing you into this life. I didnât know if you felt the same and I thought I would just be dragging you into something that wasnât worth it.â
You blink, staring at Red Robin in shock as the realization dawns on you. The pieces start to fit togetherâthe familiarity, the way he seemed to know you, the concern in his eyes.
âTim?â you whisper, your voice barely audible.
He doesnât deny it. Instead, he removes his mask, revealing the face of your childhood friend. Timâs eyes are filled with vulnerability and a hint of fear, as if heâs terrified of what you might say next.
âIâm sorry,â he says softly. âI didnât mean to keep this from you for so long. I wanted to protect you, but I ended up hurting you instead.â
Your heart races as you take in his words, the weight of his confession settling over you. The anger, confusion, and longing that have been building up inside you finally find an outlet.
âI thought,â he pauses, finding the words, âif I stayed away, you would be safe. Youâd find other people and you wouldnât need me anymore.â He shakes his head. âBut I couldnât stay away. You werenât selfish [Name]. I was.â
The night seems to stretch on, the air tense with unspoken words. You look at Tim, still grappling with the shock of his revelation. His vulnerability pierces through the stoic facade youâve seen him wear as Red Robin. The weight of his confession hangs heavy between you, stirring emotions youâve kept buried.
You get up and start walking away.
Tim winces and reaches out to you. â[Name]ââ
You whirl around. âI told you to leave me alone ,â you snarl. âSo you go and play nice with me in your stupid costume? You pity me or something?â
Tim's expression shifts, hurt flashing across his features before he schools it into a mask of determination. "No, it's not pity. I care about you, [Name]. I've always cared." His voice is earnest, pleading almost, as if he's trying to convey the depth of his feelings without fully exposing himself.
You start pacing. âGod, everything I told youââ
âI was just worried about youââ
âI trusted you.â you whisper.
He looks up at you, his expression pained. âI know I messed up. I should have been honest with you from the beginning.â
âYes, you should have,â you snap, the anger rising in you like a tidal wave. âYou had no right to decide for me.â
âYouâre right, it was wrong.â
âWrong doesnât even begin to cover it,â you retort, your voice trembling now with a mix of anger and hurt. âTim, I thought you were my friend.â
âI am your friend,â he insists, his voice desperate now, pleading for you to understand. âIâve always been your friend. Iââ
â[Name],â he pleads. âI love you.â
Your heart skips a beat at his words, the intensity of his confession crashing into you like a rogue wave. Tim stands before you, vulnerable and raw, his eyes searching yours for any sign of understanding, of forgiveness.
âThatâs why I did the things that I did.â His hand reaches out to gently take yours. âBecause I thought I wasn't enough for you, and I know I donât deserve you, but I still love you.â
His hand, warm and trembling, rests gently over yours. The city lights cast a soft glow on his face, revealing the sincerity in his eyes. Your emotions churn in a tumultuous sea of anger, hurt, and disbelief, struggling to find their place amidst his confession.
For a long moment, neither of you speaks. The silence is thick with unspoken words and unresolved feelings. Tim's gaze never wavers from yours, a mixture of hope and fear etched into his features.
âYouâre such an asshole.â
âI know.â
âI deserve better.â
âI know.â
You sigh deeply, head dropping. âMaybe itâs too late,â you say quietly, your voice wavering. âMaybe weâve both changed too much.â
âIâm sorry.â
âYouâre so unfair,â you growl, eyes growing wet. âI was trying to move on, and then you just come and do this.â
Tim winces.
You run a hand down your face tiredly. âAnd I still love you. God. Maybe I hate myself just as much as I hate you.â
âDonât say that about yourselfââ
âShut up.â
âOkay.â
You point both fingers at his face. âYou. You owe me so much.â
He nods rapidly. âIâm talking months, years of making this up to me,â you say, eyes looking into his. âYouâre gonna do anything I ask and tell me anything I want to know.â
âWhatever you want, pretty.â
You raise a brow. He purses his lips. âSorry. Youâre kind of hot right now.â
âIâm always hot.â
âYouâre right, I apologize.â
You glance at Tim, your anger softening. Despite everything, his familiar charm still manages to tug at your heartstrings. You let out a resigned sigh, realizing that beneath the hurt and confusion, there's a part of you that still cares deeply for him.
Your hands cup his face. âIâm going to kiss you now. You donât deserve it, but I want it. And this will be the only one you get for a while.â
Timâs eyes widen, and he takes a deep breath, bracing himself for whatâs about to happen. He places his hands on your waist, tightening when you donât bat him off.
As you lean in, you can feel the warmth of his breath against your skin. Your lips meet his in a kiss that is both fierce and tender, a complex blend of longing and frustration. The contact is electrifying, igniting a myriad of feelings that have been pent up for too long. For a moment, the world around you fades, leaving just the two of you amidst the city lights and the quiet of the rooftop.
Tim responds with a desperateness that contrasts with the tenderness of your kiss. His arms wrap around your waist, pulling you closer as if afraid you might disappear. The kiss lingers, neither of you rushing to pull away, savoring the connection despite the turmoil that surrounds it.
Tim presses a few fleeting kisses as you pull away. âSorry, sorry,â he mumbles, not sounding sorry at all. âWho knows when youâll let me kiss you again.â
âYouâre such a loser. Why do I love you.â
His smile goes stupid. He shoves his face into your neck. âYou love me.â
You sigh, leaning into his embrace despite yourself. âYouâre impossible, you know that?â
The two of you stand on the rooftop, wrapped in each otherâs arms, the city sprawled out beneath you. In that moment, amidst the complexities and uncertainties of life, you find a sense of peaceâa realization that perhaps, despite the changes and challenges, some things are meant to endure.
âIâll do right by you,â he vows.
You nod, feeling a bittersweet satisfaction. The process of healing and rebuilding trust will take time, but thereâs a tentative hope that maybe, just maybe, things can start to mend. You lean your head against his shoulder, feeling the familiar comfort of his presence. âLetâs just take things one step at a time. I donât want to rush this or force anything.â
Tim wraps his arms around you, his hold gentle but reassuring. âYou wonât be. I want this bad. But whatever you want.â
Eventually, and hesitantly, Tim pulls away from you. âItâs late. Please let me take you home.â
He offers his hand, and you take it.
Tim struggles to let go of your hand as you open your front door. You compromise with a kiss on his cheek. âGoodnight, Tim.â
His face goes red. âGoodnight, [Name],â he replies, his voice carrying a note of hope and promise.
You close the door behind you, feeling a renewed sense of clarity. The complexities of your emotions are still there, but you have a newfound hope that things can be mended. The city outside continues its nocturnal dance, but up on the rooftop, amidst the shared moments and honest confessions, youâve found a glimmer of possibility. And for now, thatâs enough.
notes: tim only went up to you at that gala because of his parents, but his little 8 year old self saw a cutie and said fuck it we in this for life

Understanding Foundation Slope: Key Considerations and Solutions by Foundation Solutions
Foundation slope is a critical aspect of a buildingâs structural integrity. It refers to the angle or gradient of the ground surrounding the foundation. An improper foundation slope can lead to a range of issues, including water drainage problems, soil erosion, and even foundation damage. At Foundation Solutions, we understand the importance of a well-designed foundation slope and offer expert services to address any slope-related concerns. In this blog post, weâll explore the significance of foundation slope, the common problems associated with improper slopes, and the solutions we provide to ensure your propertyâs stability and safety.
The Importance of Proper Foundation Slope
A proper foundation slope is essential for several reasons, primarily related to water management and soil stability. Here are some key benefits of maintaining the correct slope around your foundation:
Effective Water Drainage: A properly sloped foundation ensures that water drains away from the building, preventing water accumulation around the foundation. This is crucial in preventing water infiltration, which can lead to basement flooding, mold growth, and foundation weakening.
Soil Stability: A correct slope helps maintain soil stability around the foundation. Poor slope design can lead to soil erosion, undermining the foundation and causing settlement or shifting. Proper grading prevents soil displacement and supports the foundationâs integrity.
Preventing Foundation Damage: Water accumulation and soil movement due to an improper slope can cause cracks, bowing walls, and other foundation damage. A well-graded slope minimizes these risks, extending the lifespan of the foundation.
Enhanced Property Value: A property with a well-maintained foundation slope is more attractive to potential buyers. It indicates proper maintenance and reduces the likelihood of costly repairs in the future.
Erosion Control: Proper slope design helps control erosion, which can wash away soil and destabilize the foundation. Erosion control is particularly important in areas prone to heavy rainfall or with loose soil conditions.
Common Problems Caused by Improper Foundation Slope
An incorrect foundation slope can lead to various issues that compromise the safety and stability of your property. Here are some common problems associated with improper slopes:
Water Accumulation: A slope that directs water toward the foundation can lead to water pooling around the base of the building. This can result in hydrostatic pressure on the foundation walls, causing cracks and leaks.
Basement Flooding: Poor drainage due to an improper slope can lead to water seeping into the basement, causing flooding and water damage. This is a common problem in properties with negative slope (a slope that directs water toward the building).
Foundation Settlement: When the soil around the foundation becomes saturated with water, it can lead to soil expansion and contraction. This can cause uneven settlement of the foundation, resulting in cracks and structural damage.
Soil Erosion: An incorrect slope can lead to soil erosion, where the top layer of soil is washed away. This can destabilize the foundation and create voids under the foundation, leading to further settlement issues.
Landscape Damage: Poor slope design can also affect landscaping, leading to waterlogged lawns, plant damage, and erosion. Proper slope management enhances the aesthetics and functionality of outdoor spaces.
Solutions for Foundation Slope Issues
At Foundation Solutions, we offer a range of services to address foundation slope issues and ensure the stability and safety of your property. Here are some of the solutions we provide:
Foundation Grading and Regrading: Our experts assess the existing slope and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper grading. We create a slope that directs water away from the foundation, typically at a minimum slope of 5% (6 inches of fall per 10 feet).
French Drains and Drainage Systems: We install French drains and other drainage systems to manage water flow around the foundation. These systems collect and redirect water away from the foundation, preventing water accumulation and potential damage.
Soil Stabilization: In cases where soil erosion or instability is a concern, we offer soil stabilization services. This includes the use of retaining walls, terracing, and other methods to prevent soil movement and support the foundation.
Basement Waterproofing: To protect against water infiltration, we provide basement waterproofing solutions. This includes sealing cracks, installing vapor barriers, and applying waterproof coatings to the foundation walls.
Foundation Repair and Reinforcement: If the foundation has already suffered damage due to slope issues, we offer comprehensive repair and reinforcement services. This includes crack repair, underpinning, and the installation of helical piers or other support systems.
Landscaping and Erosion Control: We provide landscaping services that complement foundation slope solutions. This includes planting vegetation, installing erosion control mats, and designing drainage-friendly landscapes.

Romantic Shit: Ryan x Reader (Yellowstone)
Tagging: @hatersaremymotivators justsimplyme93 knick3rbock3r anticxrruptÂ
Prequel to Summer (NSFW)
Every morning that Ryan wakes up with you is a gift. Heâs thought that ever since you decided to take this cowboy to bed. This morning though, this morning is bitter sweet because heâs leaving in a couple of days for Texas and the two of you still havenât discussed what that means for the relationship.
When he finds you, youâre standing on the porch of your house, watching the sunrise in the distance, a mug of coffee clasped to your chest. Youâre clad in nothing but his plaid shirt and cowboy boots. The tattoo of his name stands stark against your upper thigh, a symbol of your love for him, your commitment.
This thing between the two of you was never meant to have a future.
In the beginning he didnât see how it could work, you were a deputy in the sheriffâs department and he was a land enforcement agent/cowboy who did some goddamn shady shit. The secrets you kept from one another should have strangled the life out of this thing but instead it had flourished, because there has always been a mutual understanding. Heâs got shit he canât tell you and youâve got shit you canât tell him.
âWe should talk about it.â He says quietly as he comes to lean against the wooden strut that supports the gable.
You set your coffee cup down on the railing before you turn your attention towards him. His jeans are slung low on his hips, the orange light from the sunrise plays over his bare chest, highlighting the brand thatâs seared into his skin.
âI guess I just wasnât ready for this to end just yet.â You say as you lean against the pillar opposite him.
Ryan wants to tell you it doesnât have to, that heâll be true to you out there in Texas but he canât ask you to wait a year for him, no matter how much he may want it. His fingertips trace over your name, the italic scrawl inked into his inner forearm.
KatalinaâŚ
The love of his life.
The woman whose about to become Sheriff of this county.
You canât go with him and he canât stayâŚ
âI love you.â He says quietly as he looks out across the landscape. âI will always love you, the distance doesnât change that.â
âI know.â You say softly as you come to stand beside him. âI keep asking myself whatâs one year in the space of a lifetime?âÂ
âAnd whatâs the answer?â He asks you, the back of his hand brushing lightly against yours.
Your fingers capture his, entwining them and for the first time since this conversation started he allows himself to hope.
âMarry you.â You say, squeezing his hand a little. âSo youâll know youâll always be mine, wherever you go.â
If that isnât the most romantic shit he doesnât know what is.
âAre you asking me that honey?â He murmurs, his hands coming to rest on your hips as he backs you up against the strut. He can feel the heat of your body through the shirt, he wants to unbutton it, take it off, fuck you right here on the porch. âAre you asking me to marry you before I head off to Texas?â
Your fingers lace at the base of his neck, fingertips brushing over the light curls. His hair has gotten a little long this season. Heâs been meaning to cut it but he likes the way your fingers feel when you tug it just right.
âI guess I am cowboy.â You whisper against his lips. âSo is that a yes or a no?â
Love Ryan? Donât miss any of his stories by joining the taglist here.
